No Kings Protest in Catonsville, MD [1]

There appeared to be some 700-800 people at the protest in Catonsville in Baltimore County, Maryland. We were at the intersection of Route 40 and Rolling Road, a heavily traveled major intersection, and I believe thousands of vehicles passed in the two hours I was there. There were likely 100 or so protesters at my corner of the intersection and a similar number across the street, on the north side of Route 40. There were many more on the south side, probably 200-300 strung out along the road from each corner.
I made a sign for the occasion:
Madmen
Are
Governing
America
and arrived very near the start at 10 am, so I was able to take a position close to the intersection and shift back and forth to face traffic on each of the two major roads. The protest seemed to grow steadily throughout the morning. There was a minimal (and reasonable) police presence: I saw two officers watching the crowd from a diner parking lot, and one county police car drive by. That was it.
Some of my favorite signs from the day:
Orange Lies Matter
No Faux-King Way
If there’s money for a parade, there’s money for Medicaid
Raining on Trump’s Parade
America fights fascists — it’s kind of our thing
So many issues, not enough cardboard
Plus plenty of variations on the “No Kings” theme, and some featuring the TACO epithet.
A couple of good chants got going, too:
“Donald Trump, go away! Racist, sexist, anti-gay!”
“Hey, hey, no fear! Immigrants are welcome here”
There were signs encouraging motorists to honk, and there was a tremendous amount of support — I think a majority of the cars that drove by did so, along with service vehicles and trucks. This is perhaps not too surprising, because we’re a pretty blue county in a very blue state, but it was still gratifying. I noticed three negative reactions: one guy who slowed down to give us the finger, and two big rolling coal pickups that slowed down to spew enough thick black fumes to choke an elephant at the protesters.
As noon approached, the organizers circulated to ask people to wrap it up because the demonstration had to be over at 12. So that was it: a large, peaceful, anti-Trump and anti-MAGA crowd, and a lot of support from motorists.
