Today in Frederick, MD, Rise Up!, Indivisible, and the local Democratic party’s central committee (of which I’m a member) held our No Kings! Reclaiming The Flag protest in a park downtown. Frederick is Maryland’s second biggest incorporated city, and the crowd showed up in force. Some people said 2,000, another 3,000, and my boyfriend said he thought it was 5,000 who showed up. Whatever the number, my heart was warmed and my spirit resolved by the display of patriotism for our country, as well as disgust at our current president.
The mayor spoke, and relayed a very interesting story I’d never heard about. In 1765, a group of judges in the city of Frederick (which was only 20 years old at the time) protested the Stamp Act in what they called Repudiation Day. The rejection of tyranny and injustice apparently goes back quite a ways in our fair little city.
The whole day, I only saw one pro-Tr**p flag, and noe one interacted with him. All was peaceful, celebratory, and calm. Well, maybe not all calm, as some anti-ICE protesters interrupted our Congresswoman (April Delaney) while she was delivering her remarks. I’m being generous when I say that the Congresswoman could use some practice at crowd control and public speaking.
Those opinions are solely my own, though, and do not represent my central committee or the organizers.
Anyways, here’s a bung of pics I took. Enjoy!
