What I Wrote to My Republican Senators this Morning [1]
['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.']
Date: 2025-06-13
Short and sweet: Futile or not, I felt a duty to contact my GOP senators and urge them to protest the violent treatment of their colleague Senator Padilla yesterday.
I have no faith whatsoever either Senator Reverend Mushmouth or the Compassionate Doctor about to starve children to make Musk richer will give two spits what I think, but maybe the last line will at least give them pause.
Dear Senator _______: Yesterday, a member of the body in which you serve was assaulted and handcuffed for daring to ask the Secretary of Homeland Security a question, after clearly identifying himself as a U.S. senator. Not only was the assault a violation of 18 U.S. Code § 351, which declares attacks on members of Congress a felony, but it was a direct challenge to an independent, co-equal branch of government by an authoritarian executive. You can hem and haw all you like, claiming it was a misunderstanding, or that Sen. Padilla didn't identify himself (just watch the video, please; it was the first thing out of his mouth), but this was simply a bully testing the waters. If you care in the slightest about the Constitution, separation of powers, or even your own future, you must refuse to grant unanimous consent to open the Senate for business until Secretary Noem resigns or is fired. Lastly, should you assume that the R behind your name offers immunity from executive targeting, ask Senator Paul how that's working out. Your utterly appalled constituent, My Name, address, yadda yadda
Credit to kossack ammasdarling for noting that any senator can withhold unanimous consent. Not that any ‘Pub is about to, but reminding them that they actually have power seems needed right now.
