Demolition of the old pool in progress

A Meditation On Swimming Pools and Water

When we bought our property five years ago, we had to spend quite a sum having the original swimming pool demolished, carted away, and landscaping the mess. The pool was only suitable for kids — max height, in the centre, was 1m. And being bowl shaped it was dangerous. It needed 50 cubic metres of water to fill, so it went unused until late in year 1, a hurricane passed through and lo! It was full.

I spent the next six weeks managing its pH and chlorine levels and in that time discovered the pump was undersized, the filter leaked, and all the pipework pissed water in every direction.

Since then we haven’t had a pool. And that’s OK, because I had discovered the exorbitant cost and extravagant quantity of water. Not to mention that you can’t use it most of the year unless you don’t mind paying to heat it. Do you know how many calories a 50 cu m pool takes to raise its temperature 10 degrees C? No, neither do I. But my wallet does. And just to install a pool, new, costs $7,000.

The tub’s innards (or outards, maybe)

Which brings us to this week, when I spotted on FB Marketplace, the hm tub. For $100. The new project.

I probably wouldn’t have bothered if my bathroom was big enough for a tub, which it isn’t. But for $100? I could sell its 2.5HP pump as a spare for that.

I’m good at basic plumbing but looking at all that specialised gubbins, it seems wise to bring in the supplier to advise.

Meanwhile I can be getting on laying 10ft of hot and cold water pipes and a new 240V outlet. (Two by 120V).

Apparently these tubs were all the rage 15-20 years ago, but then went out of fashion. For me though, an old geezer and poor swimmer, it makes perfect sense. You can find good used ones for very little money.
