but I felt the need to note the passing of the great South African drummer Louis Moholo-Moholo whose music has been a constant factor in my life for the past 50 years. Along with John Stevens and Tony Oxley he was one of the go-to drummers for jazz groups in Britain and on the continent during Seventies and Eighties. I had the pleasure of seeing him live only twice. I was able to speak with him both times and found him to be a very gracious man.
As a member of a mixed race group, The Blue Notes, he left South Africa in 1964 due to the apartheid restrictions. Throughout his career he played with many European and American jazz greats including Keith Tippett, Stan Tracey, Peter Brotzmann, Cecil Taylor, Steve Lacy, and Elton Dean as well as leading his own groups. Once Apartheid ended he returned to his native country bringing his gifts to a new generation of African musicians.
Louis is the last of The Blue Notes to pass on and if there is an afterlife I picture him picking up his sticks a and setting a rhythm for Chris, Dudu, Mongs, Johnny, and Nick.
Rest in peace Louis.
