Are we cool with AI content here? [1]

It’s meta time! I’m curious how people feel about the best practices around AI, and if some admin guidance may be helpful.

1. Is it ok to accuse commenters of being an AI? As a person recently accused of such, I was mildly annoyed. A personhood argument distracts from the topic of a diary, and is begging for misuse or abuse. On the other hand, AI is all around us and I would not be surprised at all that a fair percent of comments are AI generated, perhaps prompted by a human. Very quickly, we may face a scenario where AI agents can sign up here and interact autonomously. Is it more helpful to be able to call out suspected AI or more harmful to risk abuse?

2. Can I use AI to analyze comments or diaries, and then post that analysis with an attribution? I’ll share a simple example, although infinite uses exist of course. I recently wondered if I was misreading a long comment to a diary I wrote.

NOTE: the diaries (and multiple comments) in question have been unpublished. I felt they tarnished the site and should be removed in entirety even if it meant losing my own writing.

The comments sounded fairly racist to me, but I didn’t want to jump to an accusation without some kind of analysis. I dropped the text into AI and here was the output:

It’s not outright white-supremacist or genocidal, but it is quite xenophobic and racially coded.

The speaker’s argument rests disproportionately on emphasizing crime, instability, and incompatibility from certain racial, ethnic, or national groups.

The writing reflects significant racial anxiety and cultural essentialism rather than full-blown racial hatred.

In the moment I let the comment slide, largely because I felt uncomfortable bringing AI into the situation without some guidance. I didn’t want to claim AI words as my own, even though the feedback felt important. I’m still curious if it would have been ok to paste that AI analysis below the comments. I wanted an unbiased opinion and that was the closest I could come. Another downside is that it is absolutely possible to prompt AI to give you the answer you are looking for. Not only does the prompt effect the output, but any assumption that AI is truly neutral is probably naive.

3. Can I use AI to generate original content, with an attribution? A little while back I thought it would be fun to match Alan Greenspan vs Henry George in an Epic Rap Battle of History. Here’s a sample of my dream 1 v 1 matchup, 90% AI generated:

Henry George: Yo, check the mic, one two, is this apparatus on? Step aside, Mr. Chairman, your era is bygone! I’m Henry George, voice of the dispossessed mass Wrote Progress and Poverty, kicked Gilded Age ass! You see booms and busts, call it "market correction," I see the landlord's grasp, a parasitic infection! Sucking the lifeblood, the value labor creates, While you tinker with rates, sealing oligarchic fates! My thesis is clean, like a San Francisco breeze: The earth is the birthright, not for landlord decrees! Rent is the robbery, the unearned increment's theft, Tax land values only, put labor's burden to rest! Alan Greenspan:(Scoffs softly) Quaint theories, George, from a bygone domain, While I navigated markets through sunshine and rain. The ‘Maestro,’ they called me, orchestrating the flow Of capital, credit – things you couldn’t know. You rant of landlords, a simplistic refrain, Ignoring the nuance, the risk, and the gain. Modern economies function on trust and belief, Your single tax notion offers little relief. So take your pamphlets home, preach to the choir you found, While pragmatic hands keep the economy sound… mostly. Henry George: "Mostly sound"? Alan, your legacy's stained! By the dot-com inferno, the housing crash you ordained! Pragmatic hands? Or hands greasing the wheel? Ignoring the warnings, how did that make you feel? You saw asset bubbles, blew them bigger with ease, Then feigned deep surprise when they brought us to our knees! You were Rand's disciple, objectivist pride, But where's the virtue when the system has lied? You represent stagnation, entrenched power's defense, My words echo onward, they still make perfect sense!

I was surprised AI did so well. Way, way better than I could have done. So maybe AI has a place? It made me laugh pretty hard. (And shout out to Henry George, who had the right idea way back when.)

Any other AI uses or problems I haven’t seen? Is this worth worrying about? Will AI be so good that we can’t tell between AI and human, and what does that mean for this site? The moderation is better here than almost anywhere, but I’m not confident AI detection/blocking is even possible for much longer. I certainly fear for the written word.
