Menchik, Vera Francevna
[February 16 1906—June 27 1944]
Woman’s World Champion 1927-1944. Russian-born Czech/English player who the women’s world title in 1927, 1930, 1931, 1933, 1935, 1937, and 1939 and beat her main rival Sonja Graf of Germany in 1934 (+3-1) and again in 1937 (+9=5-2). In the seven title tournaments Menchik scored +78=4-1and proved her immense superiority over all other women players.
She did play in men’s tournaments and had some fine wins (over Euwe, Reshevsky, and Sultan Khan for example, all members of the so-called Vera Menchik club), but she achieved only modest overall results. Perhaps her best result was 3rd at Maribor 134, ahead of Spielmann. She beat Mieses +4=5-1 in 1942 (although he was 77 by then)
Vera Menchik, the first Women’s World Champion, who utterly dominated women’s chess before the Second World War.
She was killed by a V1 bomb in London, together with her mother and sister.
