Stockton, CA — Restore the Delta today issued the following statement regarding the forcible removal and handcuffing of U.S. Senator Alex Padilla (D-Calif.) at a Department of Homeland Security press conference:
Restore the Delta functions as a good government organization, dedicated to ensuring that public processes adhere to the rule of law. For years, we have advocated for equitable access to government planning for all people—fighting for inclusion and respect in environmental decision-making and the development of our local economy.
The removal and handcuffing of Senator Alex Padilla for asking a public question of the Department of Homeland Security is unacceptable. The ongoing reports of innocent people being arrested by federal immigration and contracted law enforcement agencies cannot continue unchecked. Whether it is a water proceeding, a civil immigration matter, or a criminal case, due process must be followed for everyone—or the rule of law will continue to erode.
Since our inception, we have worked alongside farmworker groups and local farmers, and with social and environmental justice organizations regionally and in Southern California. We stand in solidarity with all Californians during these dangerous times. We believe our state’s rights must be restored, and our immigrant communities must be protected from unlawful government actions. As one Delta farmer observed about recent ICE activity in the area: “They are just hassling hard-working people.”
As stated in our mission, Restore the Delta advocates for the health of the San Francisco Bay-Delta estuary and its communities. That includes all residents. We remain committed to democratic governance of water resources and inclusive planning at the community, regional, and state levels. We will continue working tirelessly for the protection of the Delta and its people.
