Ezra Levin, the co-founder and co-executive director of the progressive organization Indivisible that’s behind “No Kings Day,” told MSNBC on Monday that the protests—originally announced last month—have generated “overwhelming interest” in the aftermath of the Administration’s response to the immigration-related protests in Los Angeles. Time
News about the swelling numbers of events planned on No Kings Day this Saturday, spurred on by the events in Los Angeles, is dominating the media: Rolling Stone’s is anticipating ‘No Kings’: Millions to Protest Trump’s ‘Dictator-Style Birthday Parade’, Time reports More Than 1,500 ‘No Kings’ Protests Planned Amid Trump Crackdown on L.A. Demonstrations, and Axios reveals that Abbott orders National Guard deployment to protests.
From Texas:
Gov. Greg Abbott says he will deploy the Texas National Guard across the state ahead of protests planned Saturday against the Trump administration. Why it matters: Abbott's decision comes amid a national debate about the militarization of law enforcement and the rights of protestors. What they're saying: The National Guard "will be deployed to locations across the state to ensure peace & order," Abbott posted on X late Tuesday night. "Peaceful protest is legal. Harming a person or property is illegal & will lead to arrest."
He instructed the Texas National Guard to "use every tool & strategy to help law enforcement maintain order."
Abbott didn't specify where troops will be deployed. There are more than 60 protests planned Saturday in Texas.
Newsweek reports:
A May 6 news release from the grassroots nonprofit Indivisible said "a coalition of pro-democracy partner organizations" was behind the "NO KINGS Nationwide Day of Defiance on Flag Day." The partner organizations include 50501 (50 protests, 50 states, one movement) and other organizations behind previous mobilization efforts. Organizers have said regarding the protests: "All No Kings events adhere to a shared commitment to nonviolent protest and community safety. Organizers are trained in de-escalation and are working closely with local partners to ensure peaceful and powerful actions nationwide."
In my county Saturday, there are 20 popup protests scheduled. I’m going to one about 2 miles away from my house.
How about you?
