The recent anti-Ice demonstrations taking place across the nation have stirred a lot of emotions. Demonstrators have taken to the streets and waved flag from their native countries while protesting the current administration, criminalization, persecution and deportation of immigrants and refugees without due process.

Many in the right have claimed that protestors shouldn’t wave flags from other countries if they want to be seen as Americans.

For many years immigrants love to their native land has been weaponized by the right as a way to claim that we are not fully Americans.

Such rhetoric by the right has made me recalled a poem I wrote a few years ago:

- (Hyphenated) American

because you see me waving a flag

that does not contain stripes and stars

and it enrages you to see my delight

without taking the time

to know that my pride

is born from the pain of being so far

for so long, from my native land.
