[One of my ‘letters to the editor’ series for the local paper, attempting to reach that crossover vote]
Seriously… the Marines?
The Marines are trained to be a killing machine, against a foreign enemy. This is what they are there for. This is what they do.
You really think it’s normal to be sending the Marines into residential neighborhoods, in a US city, to deal with a handful of hooligans, who are taking advantage of a peaceful protest to burn a few cars?!
At what point might they be ordered to turn their M27 sights on those peaceful protesters?
How do you think the Marines feel about being put in this situation?
What a deeply irresponsible, stupid, and dangerous thing to do just so our reality TV ‘bully-in-chief’ can appear tough to his bamboozled base.
Speaking of which… my usual disclaimer: If you’re one of those who resides near the bottom of that right wing information silo, this is not for you.
As I forewarned a few letters back, Trump intends to invoke the Insurrection Act and declare martial law. He was always going to do this. He has no other choice but to do this.
The Trump Administration and the lock-step Republican Party (the Trumplican Party) does not govern, as I also suggested recently. Their only goal is to accumulate power for power's sake, as all authoritarian regimes do.
The primary mechanism for doing that is to create chaos and crises, either real or imagined, then use that turmoil to trigger an 'emergency' action, allowing them to establish a police state, and therefore ultimate power. Every authoritarian system in history has followed that same playbook, without a single exception.
This terroristic chaos also has a secondary purpose. It's a great diversion. What better way to distract citizens from the institutional, environmental, and economic destruction underway?
For instance: The upcoming cuts to Medicaid and Medicare (the latter being set up to be triggered automatically, so they can pretend they had nothing to do with it, see "PAYGO"); the ongoing and blatant corruption and bribery taking place; the continued demolition of the public school system; the massive tax cuts for billionaires that will explode the deficit; the assault on science, with even Germ Theory now open to ‘debate’; and dozens of other authoritarian schemes currently being implemented. Schemes that will ultimately make their way to the Roberts Supreme Court, where ‘the six’ are eagerly waiting to give their stamp of approval. (I would wager many of these "decisions" have already been written).
There’s no subterfuge going on here, not anymore. They’re just going for it, gambling they can get there before you catch on.
So please, get your head around what’s happening, and do it now. Don’t wait. Take some action, if nothing more than vowing to pay closer attention, and be more discerning about your news sources.
Because once the 'big one' hits (trust me, it’s coming), and they begin the suspension of civil rights, including voting rights… there is no going back.
It’s not patriotism to blindly support a political movement that has gone this far off the rails. Quite the opposite in fact.
We – all of us who maintain a sense of civic duty and allegiance to our country – must join together and stop them now.
We can squabble over meaningless issues like bathroom bills and trans athletes later.
