Canvassing Michigan: 3 GOP Targets, 2 Protect Seats &, oh BTW, an Open Senate Seat [1]

['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.']

Date: 2025-06-12

We are now canvassing in 15 of Hope Springs from Field PAC [dated website, to be updated in the Fall] target states: Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, New Hampshire, Nevada, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia & Wisconsin. We are fairly stretched for an all-volunteer outfit but we still hope to expand into one more Congressional District and (apparently) one more state. Details on that latter (the added state was a new suggestion from organizers and statewide candidate in that state).

2026 Gubernatorial Map

We haven’t diaried about Michigan yet. But Sen. Gary Peters reclined to run for re-election, and this makes Michigan doubly important! If you look at both the Senate and Gubernatorial maps here, you see Michigan is the only “Toss-Up” state in both.

Saturday was our third opportunity to canvass in the state. Weather has been the primary reason why.

But our targets in Michigan has been re-focused this year. Last cycle, we canvassed in MI-3, MI-4, MI-7, MI-8 & MI-10. This year, with the knowledge of that (2024) election in hand, Democrats are going after GOP seats in MI-4, MI-7 & MI-10. MI-10 is now an open seat, since the incumbent is now running for governor. All three of the targeted seats currently have Republican incumbents but, as you can see from the map below, MI-4 is rated as “leans Republican” for this cycle. MI-7 is considered a toss-up seat at the moment, which matches its Cook PVI of EVEN. We are still knocking on doors in MI-3 (Cook PVI: D+1), where Democrat Hillary Scholten is the incumbent, and MI-8, where Democrat Kristen McDonald Rivet is the incumbent. Rivet faces her first re-election campaign.

As i mentioned, Saturday was only our third canvass in the state this year. We started off strong, but our second canvass had several areas rained out (and, thus, cancelled). But last weekend was perfect! And, in the northern tier, that is saying something.

Last year, our Michigan volunteers were mostly female. That has been less true this year. Some of that could be because of the cooler weather we’ve experienced, but who knows?
