The Missoula Art Museum (MAM) in Missoula, Montana, held a special exhibition of Dagny Walton’s This Land is Haunted!.

According to MAM:

“A gripping exploration of the American West, Walton’s work confronts the dark myths of westward expansion, focusing on the cowboy archetype and its inextricable ties to violence and colonial history. Through her striking prints and illustrations, Walton reimagines the West as a ghost story, where spirits of the land—representing both past atrocities and present ecological crises—haunt the landscape.

Walton’s powerful exhibition challenges the romanticized view of the cowboy and the frontier, exposing a history of destruction and unresolved tensions. As she explains, “The cowboy…is largely a cultural hero… My intent is to highlight this brutality… and question these social notions of heroism.” This Land is Haunted! offers a haunting interpretation of the West, where the land itself is active, watching, and alive with memory.”
