Trump is entering his lame duck phase. Don’t let him wreck American science on the way out. [1]

In the midst of all the other chaos and damage to cherished American traditions it seems to be going more or less unnoticed that the horrid budget bill already passed by the House simple destroys American science. But… it has not passed the Senate yet, and as Trump’s poll numbers continue to sink and the next year’s midterm elections come closer, his honeymoon phase is ending and his lame duck period begins. That is the only hope we have right now, the more we can delay this vote and the reconciliation process, the less likely this disastrous budget bill gets passed.
The damage this bill is set to do is enormous, and it is unthinkable to me that any House member supported it. The National Institutes of Health cut by 40%, the National Science Foundation cut by over 50%. Research funding on climate change, wind and solar power, renewable energy integration into the grid is zeroed out. NSF funding for biology, engineering and education will be cut by over 70%. As the headline figure shows, planetary science will be cut by 50%, essentially ending all missions that have not yet been built. And the cuts go on and on and on. It would take decades to recover from these cuts (if ever), careers and young scientists would be ruined, and the US may never recover its global leadership in science. Many colleges and universities get a large portion of their fiscal underpinning from research grants, so this evil bill embodies yet another attack on our university system. It is time to call your Senators, especially if you live in a red state, and remind them that the midterms are coming and it ain’t looking good for the GOP. Whatever the Senate comes up with, it has to pass the House again, and there are GOP reps who need to be reminded that we are watching and they may very well lose their seats. For American science and our university system, it is absolutely DEFCON 1.
