Sacramento Poor People's Campaign Opposes ICE Raids and Trump's call for National Guard in LA [1]

The Sacramento Poor People's Campaign (Sac PPC) issued this statement today regarding the Trump regime’s ICE raids and repression of protesters:

“The Sacramento Poor People's Campaign (Sac PPC) stands in solidarity with both documented and undocumented community members in Los Angeles County and across the nation. We oppose ICE raids and Trump's call for the National Guard.

We demand policies that respect human rights, protect families, and ensure dignity, access to education, and opportunity for all. We urge communities to come together in support of marginalized individuals. Let's not let them divide us! Instead, we need to reaffirm our fundamental principles: the right of everyone, regardless of race, class, immigration status, religion, gender, or sexuality, to have a safe place to live without fear of being deported.

The Administration and Congress are Hurting Our People, AND We Won’t Be Silent Anymore!!

The Sacramento Poor People’s Campaign (Sac PPC) will host three Moral Monday events that focus on the impacts of the administration’s proposed budget cuts on poor and low-income communities, focusing first on the effects on the social safety net and Medicaid/Medicare (June 9), then on the planet and the climate (June 16), and finally on immigration, civil rights, and Palestinian support (June 23).

These events will also address the Campaign’s interrelated pillars of racism, poverty, militarism, environmental destruction, and the escalating distorted moral narrative facing our country. The Campaign is a national initiative led by faith leaders, progressives, advocates, and community members engaged in the struggle for social and economic justice.

We are demanding that Congress protect Medicaid, food assistance, housing support, and expand the social safety net. We also encourage the entire congressional delegation from California to support these measures. Congress is planning deep cuts to the social safety net, including:

13.7 million: Number of people who will lose Medicaid under the current House Reconciliation Bill

11 million, including 4 million children: Number of people who will lose SNAP under the current House Reconciliation Bill

4.5 million: Number of children who will lose the Child Tax Credit under the House Reconciliation Bill (does not include 17 million who already don’t qualify for the full credit due to low incomes)

AND it doesn't have to be this way! We demand an expanded social safety net that lifts from the bottom and allows all of us to thrive, not struggle to survive!

The Sacramento Moral Mondays will not involve direct actions. Still, they will serve as a response to the severe budget cuts, the dismantling of rights, and unjust policies prevalent at local, state, and national levels. The events will take place in a central location in Sacramento, allowing the community to come together to promote and restore "morality" in the public sphere. Each Monday will serve as a platform for unity, pushing back against false narratives, harmful policies, and misguided perceptions of democracy in the state.

President Trump has just issued a new proclamation banning people from 12 countries from entering the US!

On Wednesday, June 4, 2025, President Trump issued a proclamation banning nationals from a dozen countries — Afghanistan, Burma, Chad, the Republic of Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, and Yemen — from entering the United States. These new restrictions primarily target African and Asian nations and are justified as necessary for strengthening national security and combating terrorism. In reality, this should be understood as part of a broader agenda that is anti-Black, anti-BPOC (Black and People of Color), anti-homeless, anti-migrant, anti-trans, and anti-poor. These new travel restrictions mark the return of one of the most divisive policies from Trump's first term — a 2017 travel ban that Trump today referred to as one of his “most successful policies."

Policies that criminalize and dehumanize individuals not only deny fundamental human rights but also erode the foundations of our communities. We demand policies that respect human rights, protect families, and ensure dignity, access to education, and opportunity for all. We call on communities to unite in support of marginalized individuals. Let's not let them divide us! Instead, we need to reaffirm our fundamental principles: the right of everyone, regardless of race, class, immigration status, religion, gender, or sexuality, to have a safe place to live without fear of being deported.

For the most part, we are a nation of immigrants — first from England, France, and Spain, and later from all over the world. The Statue of Liberty in New York harbor, one of our most famous national monuments, holds aloft her torch to welcome the “tired, poor, and huddled masses” seeking a better life in the new world. The contributions of immigrant workers and their families have been a cornerstone of our nation’s prosperity. Yet, despite these contributions — and even despite the U.S. Constitution's promise of fundamental rights to all residents — our nation's history has been marred by numerous severe violations of these rights, particularly in regard to people of color.

Let’s not only demand justice but also work collectively to build a future where human dignity and equal opportunity are guaranteed for all!
