Evening Shade---Resistance Rising---Monday, June 9th [1]

A SANCTUARY OF SANITY AFTER A LONG HARD DAY OF FIGHTING FASCISM YOU WILL FIND in the DIARIES a LOT of POLITICS (Or NOT As the CASE MAY BE) AND EVEN MORE CRITTERS THE PERSON who MAKES the FIRST COMMENT WILL GET TWO CRITTERS EVERY PERSON WHO COMMENTS WILL GET A CRITTER RULES IN THE DIARY WHEN YOU FIND SOMETHING in the DIARY that you LIKE YOU CAN REPOST IT AS COMMENT in the DIARY

===

A gentle administrative note that we could use more volunteers, especially for critter wrangling, but diarists,too. There are resources available if one asks in the mornings.

===

Another admin note: I was hoping to share a Google Calendar to list who our diarists and herders are for Nanny’s upcoming vacation. It doesn’t work like Google Docs, where you can specify that anyone with a link can view it — I’d need e-mail addresses and to explicitly share with everyone who wanted to see it.

I went with a spreadsheet. There’s a template for an annual calendar, but I found it pretty useless for my needs. So, this is an old school spreadsheet. Here’s my work in progress .

Feel free to volunteer to pick up the open dates. I’ll update the calendar as appropriate.

Let’s get started!

FWIW, the weather forecast in Washington, DC on Saturday shows it as a rainy day.

Also, because I really like Tom Tomorrow’s work (Monday morning dKos diary)

Elon Musk's father to attend pro-Kremlin event in Russia hosted by far-right ideologue (kyivindependent.com)

Errol Musk, the father of U.S. billionaire Elon Musk, has arrived in Moscow to attend the Forum of the Future 2050, a pro-Kremlin event scheduled for June 9-10, the Russian newspaper Kommersant reported on June 8. The report comes amid a high-profile public conflict between Elon Musk, the world’s wealthiest businessman, and his former ally, U.S. President Donald Trump. In May, Musk announced he would step down as an advisor to Trump and as the de facto head of the Department of Government Efficiency. Since then, he has emerged as a major critic of the president. The pro-Kremlin event will be hosted by the Tsargrad Institute and led by far-right Russian ideologue Alexander Dugin. "I am eager to meet everyone. As far as I know, Russians are among the most intelligent people on the planet. It would be foolish not to ask their opinion on all sorts of issues," Errol Musk was quoted as saying by the Russian state news agency TASS.✂️

Think Big Picture substack has a great rundown of senate opposition of the budget bill. Unfortunately, it’s almost all quotes and flutters, etc., so it’s pretty impossible to quote, so here’s a link that you can read when you need a pick-me-up.

The more than 1,000-page One Big Beautiful Bill, which includes about $4.9 trillion in tax breaks, budget cuts, and new work requirements for Medicaid, among other budgetary changes, passed 215-214 in the House last month following weeks of negotiations. Republicans Thomas Massie of Kentucky and Warren Davidson of Ohio voted against it, joining every House Democrat. According to the Congressional Budget Office, the bill will add $2.4 trillion to the U.S. national debt. It also stated that the legislation reduces taxes by $3.75 trillion. The poll comes as the bill is being debated in the Senate and as Elon Musk spoke out against it, sparking a feud with Trump.✂️

x We see what they’re doing. They’re baiting us, trying to provoke violence to justify a crackdown. Don’t give them the footage they want. Every broken window becomes propaganda in their hands. ActBlue says GOP investigation might be a partisan violation of the Constitution (Politico)

In a new letter obtained by POLITICO, the Democratic fundraising platform says committees investigating it may be improperly collaborating with the Justice Department. ActBlue is fighting back against a House Republican investigation into its workings, saying the probe appears to have become an unconstitutional abuse of power to help the White House. The Democratic online fundraising platform said Monday in a letter obtained by POLITICO that it was reevaluating whether to cooperate with the ongoing congressional investigation into fraud on its platform in light of President Donald Trump’s executive action to investigate potential foreign contributions on ActBlue and House Republicans’ public statements supporting the White House.✂️

ICE Agents Stranded in Africa: What to Know (Newsweek)

Nearly a dozen Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials and a group of eight deportees have been left stranded at a U.S. military base in Djibouti, East Africa, after a judge blocked their removal to South Sudan. Federal officials, agents, and detainees are now confined in a makeshift detention center in a shipping container at Camp Lemonnier, facing risks from disease, extreme heat, poor air quality, and warnings of potential rocket attacks. "ICE officers continue to feel ill with symptoms such as coughing, difficulty breathing, fever, and achy joints. These symptoms align with bacterial upper respiratory infection, but ICE officers are unable to obtain proper testing for a diagnosis," Melissa Harper, acting deputy executive associate director for ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations, wrote in a court filing.✂️

Canada won’t become the 51st US state – but could it join the EU? (The Guardian)

Joachim Streit has never stepped foot in Canada. But that hasn’t stopped the German politician from launching a tenacious, one-man campaign that he readily describes as “aspirational”: to have the North American country join the EU. “We have to strengthen the European Union,” said Streit, who last year was elected as a member of the European parliament. “And I think Canada – as its prime minister says – is the most European country outside of Europe.” Streit had long imagined Canada as a sort of paradise, home to dense forests that course with wide, rushing rivers. But after Donald Trump returned to power, launching much of the world into a trade war and turning his back on America’s traditional allies, Streit began to cast the northern country in a new light. What he saw was a relatively unexplored relationship, one that could prove mutually beneficial as the world grapples with rapidly reshaping global dynamics. “Canadians have seen their trust in the US undermined, just as we have in Europe, following President Trump’s actions,” he said. “We need to strengthen the ties that bind us to our friends.”✂️
