Shown below is an overview of the Columbia Gorge Museum in Stevenson, Washington.

According to the Museum:

“The square piano was more of a conversation piece than a playing instrument. Due to its shape, the harp had to be made very narrow affecting the tone. It was first made at the turn of the 19th century and discontinued in the late 1860s due to the lack of quality tone, being difficult to repair, and not retaining a tuning for very long. Because the square had little to offer musically, it was mostly used by wealthy families as a showy piece of furniture.”
