Activists say Israeli troops have boarded aid ship

Activists say Israeli troops have boarded a yacht trying to bring humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip, in defiance of an Israeli naval blockade. "Connection has been lost" on the Madleen, the Freedom Flotilla Coalition (FFC) campaign group said on the Telegram app. It posted a photo showing people in life jackets sitting with their hands up. Appearing to confirm that the ship had been boarded, Israel's foreign ministry said the yacht was "safely making its way to the shores of Israel" and its passengers were "expected to return to their home countries". Climate activist Greta Thunberg is among those aboard the vessel, which was reported to be off the Egyptain coast Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz had warned that the yacht should turn back and that Israel would act against any attempt to breach the blockade.

Salmonella outbreak linked to California egg distributor sickens 79 people

As of Friday, a salmonella outbreak linked to a California egg producer had sickened at least 79 people. Of the infected people, 21 hospitalizations were reported, U.S. health officials said. Organic and cage-free brown eggs from August Egg Company with specific sell-by dates distributed across nine states and retail locations should be thrown away or returned to where they were purchased, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said. The CDC report acknowledged that the number of sick people in the outbreak was likely much higher than the number reported, because most people with salmonella recover without seeking medical care or getting tested for the bacterial infection.

Tropical Storm Barbara strengthens off Mexico and is expected to become a hurricane overnight

MEXICO CITY (AP) — Tropical Storm Barbara was strengthening Sunday off the southwest coast of Mexico and was expected to become a hurricane overnight but without menacing land, the National Hurricane Center in Miami said. Barbara was located about 205 miles (325 kilometers) south-west of the touristic port of Zihuatanejo in Guerrero state, according to the center. It had maximum sustained winds of 60 mph (95 kph), and was moving west-northwest at 12 mph (19 kph). No coastal watches or warnings were issued. The storm is expected to become a hurricane overnight as it continues to move west-northwest for two more days, before turning toward west at a slower forward speed into the Pacific by Tuesday, forecasters said. Barbara formed off the southwest coast of Mexico earlier Sunday. Heavy rainfall totals of 2 to 4 inches (5 to 10 centimeters) are possible across portions of the Mexican states of Guerrero, Michoacan, Colima, and Jalisco through Monday. This rainfall may lead to flooding and mudslides.

Shot Colombian presidential candidate survives emergency surgery

Miguel Uribe, the rightwing Colombian presidential candidate who was shot at a campaign event in Bogotá on Saturday, has made it through emergency surgery but is still fighting for his life, according to his wife. Uribe, a 39-year-old senator for the opposition conservative Democratic Centre party and an outspoken critic of Colombia’s leftwing president, Gustavo Petro, was attacked as he hosted the event in a public park in the Fontibón neighbourhood of the Colombian capital. Images from the scene showed Uribe, who is running for the presidency in 2026, slumped against the bonnet of a white car, smeared with blood, as a group of men tried to hold him and stop the bleeding. Uribe was airlifted to a hospital in Bogotá in a critical condition but “overcame the first surgical procedure”, the city’s mayor, Carlos Fernando Galán, told the media.

Thousands protest in Madrid against Pedro Sánchez’s government

Tens of thousands of people have gathered in central Madrid to protest against the government of Spain’s socialist prime minister, Pedro Sánchez, and to demand an early general election, as his party, his administration and his family continue to be beset by a succession of corruption allegations. Sunday’s protest, called by the opposition conservative People’s party (PP) under the slogan “mafia or democracy”, attracted between 45,000 and 50,000 people, according to the central government’s delegation to the region. Organisers put the attendance at 100,000. Sánchez’s government and his inner circle have faced a series of corruption allegations over the past year. Pressure on his Spanish Socialist Workers’ party (PSOE) has increased over recent days after a former member of the party was accused of trying to wage a smear campaign against the Guardia Civil police unit investigating the prime minister’s wife, Begoña Gómez, his brother, David Sánchez, and the former transport minister José Luis Ábalos.

From research to restrooms: Summer staffing crunch hits national parks after Trump cuts

CODY, Wyoming, June 8 (Reuters) - At Yosemite National Park in California, one of the oldest and most popular U.S. natural preserves, the workforce is stretched so thin this season that nearly all staffers, even scientists, are required to take turns cleaning campground toilets, according to two people familiar with conditions there. The staff hydrologist and an invasive species expert have also been posted at entry gates to process visitors, a job normally handled by lower-paid seasonal workers and junior staff, one of the sources said. It's a reflection of a severe worker shortage in national parks across the country, which have been under budget and understaffed for years, that has been made worse by cuts to the federal workforce by President Donald Trump and tech billionaire Elon Musk's cost-cutting Department of Government Efficiency. The NPS said in an email to Reuters that park staff may be asked to take on extra roles to keep parks safe and open. "At times, team members may step into a range of responsibilities outside their usual scope to help ensure continued access, safety, and stewardship across the park system," the NPS said.

US troops make first detentions in Trump border military zones

June 8 (Reuters) - U.S. troops have made their first detentions inside military areas set up on the U.S.-Mexico border as part of the Trump administration's crackdown on illegal immigration, the U.S. Army said. The unprecedented military areas along 260 miles (418 km) of border in New Mexico and Texas were declared extensions of U.S. Army bases by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, allowing troops to temporarily detain migrants and other civilian trespassers. Three “illegal aliens” were detained by troops in the New Mexico area near Santa Teresa on June 3, before being handed to U.S. Border Patrol, Army spokesperson Major Geoffrey Carmichael said in an email. "This marks the first time Department of Defense personnel have recorded a temporary detainment within either National Defense Area," Carmichael said. President Donald Trump took military use a step further by giving troops the right to hold trespassers they catch in the zones until civilian law enforcement assumes custody.

Friedrich Merz brings new political style to Germany

The consensus was that he handled it quite well: The new German Chancellor Friedrich Merz got through his first visit to US President Donald Trump without any heated exchanges or diplomatic faux pas. Although he hardly had a chance to speak during the nearly 50-minute press conference in the Oval Office, he was able to say that Germany will continue to support Ukraine in its defense against Russia. For his part, Trump treated the conservative politician with more respect than he did former Chancellor Olaf Scholz, who was not invited to the White House, or Angela Merkel, whom Trump once famously refused to shake hands with in the Oval Office. Things have been pretty busy in German politics since May 6, when Merz, of the center-right Christian Democratic Union (CDU), took office. Since then, Germany's new head of government has made surprising statements and bold announcements nearly every week.

'Don't shoot!' Maxine Waters begs National Guard not to use guns at protest

Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA) pleaded with National Guard troops not to use their weapons against protesters. The California lawmaker showed up at an anti-ICE demonstration near Los Angeles on Sunday after President Donald Trump ordered the National Guard to be deployed. "There's no reason to shoot anybody!" Waters shouted to the service members. "Don't allow them to make your service a service where you're killing people."

"Don't do it. Defy them!" she added. "Don't shoot those guns for anything!"
