Diarist’s note: The article below was originally posted on All About Trains
In the “The Railroad Dispatcher: A Most Important Role” post of June 6, 2025, in no uncertain terms, I wrote:
If one were to conduct a comprehensive survey asking what the most important function of running a railroad today would be, there would, no doubt, be a range of responses. Likely selected would be train operations and maintenance-of-way work and public relations and marketing and customer support and accounting and running the railroad from the highest executive level but, so too, included among those would be dispatching.
Today, I thought it would be fun to explore the notion of what would be the best railroad job to have. And, by best I mean the slot that would bring the most satisfaction.
The Media Relations Manager or Marketing or Sales Executive position works for me. Others may believe that working as a Human Resources representative is all the rage.
I remember way back when (in 2002) I was doing a railroad-safety related story for an agricultural publication, the magazine called Nut Grower, the published article titled: “Blood on the Tracks” (just so you know, this magazine is no longer being published), and in gathering story information, I had the privilege of working with a railroad Public Relations professional. Now, all these years later and thinking back, how cool a job would that be to have?! I can only imagine now how that professional’s job description would read.
I can also think of another great railroad job: Company Photographer. Immediately coming to mind is the likeness of Nicholas Morant. Morant is perhaps one of the North American continent’s most famous. There is a spectacular curve in the Canadian Rockies along the Canadian Pacific — Morant’s Curve — by the way, that is named for him. I would imagine if you like trains and you like photography, could there be any greater job?!
Of course, writing about trains as an independent brings its own rewards.
Ahem, to repeat what I said earlier, it’s fun just thinking about it.
