Photo Diary: Clearwater Beach, FL [1]

Florida is of course famous for its sunny sandy beaches. Clearwater Beach, in Pinellas County, is one of the most popular with the tourists and often ranks in the “top ten beaches in the US”.

I must confess though—it is not my favorite. I am not a “lay on a blanket and splash around in the water” kind of person. I prefer to look at wild critters, and those are distinctly lacking at Clearwater Beach. Too many people, too many hotels, and too many tourist spots. But, it’s at least a nice place to walk around in the sun for a while and people-watch, and I have often had the chance to chat with people from all over the US and around the world, from as far away as China and Russia.

Some photos from an afternoon at the beach.

Scooping for shells. There aren’t many on this beach.

The reefs here are about a mile offshore, so the shells tend to get busted up on the way in

There are only a few natural dunes here, and they are protected
