Job Corps, the federal training program that give youth without a lot of chances a chance at a trade and a life, has a lot of friends, it turns out.
On Friday, 199 Members of Congress signed a letter to the Secretary of Labor supporting and defending the Job Corps. Members from both sides of the aisle signed on, and for once, the word ‘bipartisan’ doesn’t sound like the punch line to an unfunny joke.
Full disclosure: I work at one of the Job Corps Centers that are under the gun in Oregon. Not only are chances of a lot of young people who’ve decided to take the affirmative step to enrol in this program in danger, but the jobs of those of us who power that engine hang in the balance.
Now, about 200 MC’s supporting Job Corps isn’t the same as a decision on the 17th turning the TRO into an injunction while the NJCA’s suit unfolds in the court. It is, however encouraging. It shows that there are a lot of people who matter who also thinks Job Corps matters, and that there is the real glimmer of a chance that this program will continue.
Of my Oregon delegation, five of the six signed the letter supporting Job Corps:
Representative Suzanne Bonamici (OR-1st)
Representative Maxine Dexter MD (OR-3rd)
Representative Val Doyle (OR-4th)
Representative Janelle Bynum (OR-5th)
Representative Andrea Salinas (OR-6th)
The sixth member of Oregon’s delegation, Cliff Bentz, is MIA, but that’s no surprise. His approach to constituent needs is to brag about how he’s supporting President Trump and the Big Beautiful Bill. All he really cares is about being in power and throwing red meat to the crowd, which is terribly on-point for a Republican member from Oregon’s 2nd.
Below is a link to the document, hosted by Representative Jimmy Gomez (D, CA-34). Some surprising names on that list.
How did your representatives respond?
