Hello to all. Because I’ve got to be proactive about processing things as they come along, I will be writing things out as one way to do so. As I sit sipping coffee listening to Peter Sagal interview Jeff Gordon I’m specifically processing the dust up between Trump and Musk. I’m not all that impressed by what I see as performative bullshit.
What I see is a WWE marinated sidebar playing out on an ancillary stage while a big set change takes place on the main stage. Ala The Last Airbender the spat involves a member of the Politics Bender tribe and a Finance Bender. The Finance Bender hurls threats of contract cancellations and regulation flexing while the Politics Bender deftly flicks insider intrigue and election purchase. Has an impasse come? As I compose this no new lobs have been flung. It seems they will both stay at the dance, but are going to circulate with the crowd.
But this plot is serving another purpose. Each actor is playing their role directly to the section of the audience where his mob has massed. Each is masterfully whipping his erstwhile antagonist’s mob into deeper adulation. The barbs each has endured surely drew blood, but a closer look shows the makeup blood patches being pulled open from offstage.
Trump hasn’t used the term “financial ruin” aimed at Musk. From what has played out to now, the losses Musk is being threatened with by Trump won’t in any way amount to it either. I keep seeing how much specific actions by Trump could cost Musk, but the fact that Musk could easily afford to spend 10X more than these losses to buy the necessary portion of the federal legislature which will obey him in telling Trump “No!” is not lost on Trump. Trump will not piss off such a huge sum of lucre. But Trump’s threats advance the plot of our play with some product placement; the product being Musk himself. Musk’s wealth is one of the main story lines here in that, for far too much of this audience, it demands worship.
The other story line, needing only a passing reference to bring notice, is Trump’s Epstein connection. Here is where I reject the narrative. We’ve all known this since way before Trump entered politics. I take it as true that Trump raped young girls on a fellow billionaire’s private island. I’m as empowered to do anything about it as you are. The worse aspect to ponder still is who exactly received precisely the gist of the message- MAGA. Sordid as it is, Trump’s perversity is endearing to them.
