On March 12th, 1930 78 people set out to walk to the ocean. On April 6th, after walking 240 miles they reached the sea and there they made their own salt. A simple act, but it struck at the core of colonial power. The British had a monopoly on salt and it was illegal in India to make your own salt. Indians needed to buy it from official sources so that the British would make money from it. If the locals simply made their own, the British couldn’t profit from it. As a result, 60,000 Indians were jailed and the law stayed in place. But it made international news and inspired the country towards independence.
But when I say “Anytime” in my title I mean anytime. The key parts of the phrase are “enough of us” and “act”. If you are serious about stopping ICE, then we need protests around every ICE facility in the country. Don’t let ICE vehicles in or out. If you are serious about stopping Billionaires, stop buying their goods. (See MikeyMikey’s excellent series on this). If you want Trump out of office, then we surround the capital and remove him from power.
The trick here is that some of these things don’t follow laws as written. Preventing ICE from moving about will get you arrested. Enough people need to want it to stop so that they can’t arrest as all and we still shut them down. Surrounding DC to prevent the government from running will collapse the government. But you need to want it badly enough to risk being arrested.
Not buying from Billionaires will also get, … hey. This one is legal and won’t get you arrested at all. So where are you all on that one?
WE THE PEOPLE really means the people who show up. I’m not currently on the Blue Wave in 2026 bandwagon as I don’t see the commitment from enough of us willing to show up and act. Walking around town I see a few people out with signs, but the majority go on with their daily lives. Perhaps a few whispers here and there or some quiet conversation with trusted friends.
When enough of us gather to decide this country will be run in a fair and ethical manner, then we will have fairness and ethics. When everyone waits for someone else to start, then we will never get there.
If you want democracy in this country, you have to want it. You have to be willing to work for it. You have to be willing to make sacrifices for it. You have to be willing to be known as someone standing up for it.
