Trump Always Chickens Out (TACO) is becoming a common Wall St response to tariffs. Or lack of response to yet another tariff announcement. Wall St and world leaders are getting used to Trump’s constant threatening of even greater tariffs and are starting to respond with big beautiful yawns. They know that if they just wait a few weeks, Trump will reverse himself by reducing or postponing the tariff he just imposed.
Democrats are again missing another opportunity. Trump gets away with his outrageous behavior because of the unwavering loyalty of his MAGA gang. If we want counteract Trump, we need to drive down his popularity enough that Republican legislators aren’t afraid to distance themselves from him. If their re-election hopes are tied to the Titanic, they may start to abandon ship.
And his on-again off-again tariffs are the tool that we can use to do this. Democratic legislators should be speaking up, saying, “Trump is a chicken and is afraid to follow through on his tariffs.” “Trump is a coward and afraid of foreign leaders.” And especially, “Trump’s weakness on his own tariffs is just embarrassing — it makes the United States look weak.”
But the main target shouldn’t be legislators looking to get soundbites published — the target should be conservative podcasters, Joe Rogan and his “manly macho” kind, the ones who were primarily responsible for appealing to young men who turned to Trump in this last election. Any talk show or podcaster that accepts phone calls should get a flood of calls asking why Trump is chickening out again on his tariffs, asking if Trump is a coward or just stupid, asking , asking is a chicken worse than a coward, asking if an always-changing tariff worse than no tariff, etc.
Tired of Trump? Take a turn at the phones and ask, “Is Trump a chicken or a coward? Why Trump is afraid to Make America Great Again?”
