Sound and fury, signifying nothing..... [1]

On Wednesday, the first of two debates was held among the nine Democratic candidates for Mayor of NYC.
The focal point was former Governor Andrew Cuomo, whom polling shows is far and away the leading candidate. He was attacked from all sides for his COVID performance (specifically the issue of lying to Congress about the situation at nursing homes), accusations of sexual harassment and promoting a toxic workplace. The result was…..a gift for Andrew Cuomo.
He knew the attacks that would be coming and had responses prepared, and his supporters (45% of the Democratic electorate in recent polling) are aware of his failings and don’t consider them disqualifying. Each attack meant he got an opportunity to respond, giving him far more screen time than anyone else. And, with the exception of socialist Zohran Mamdani, none of the other candidates made an attempt to distinguish themselves from the rest of the herd.
Early voting starts next Saturday. So far, no candidate has announced a strategy for voters to support OTHeR candidates in the 2nd round (every candidate was asked this question and every candidate hedged). The opportunity for anyone to shake up the Primary is dwindling.
UPDATE: Today, State Senator Jessica Ramos, who was targeting hispanic voters, dropped out and endorsed Cuomo.
