GNR for Friday, June 6, 2025: Travel edition [1]

['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.']

Date: 2025-06-06

Welcome 🌻 to Friday’s Roundup of Good News!

Gnusies, this week I’m traveling and I don’t know how much time I will have to work on the GNR. So, I ask your indulgence if some of the news is older and if maybe you have heard it before. Remember, repetition is good!

Seriously, repetition is good. I bet there are many people here who are first-time learners, but many in the world are not.

Also, there may be extra repetition. On Wednesday I sent out an emergency email to the GNR authors group because, due to travel, I was having internet issues and could not work on this. I have since cancelled the request for an emergency potluck for today, but not everyone may see both messages.

And, there’s always the chance the internet will fail again… Actually, it DID fail again, so if there are missing bits, sorry!

Anyway, come on in, gnusies, and take a look at what has been rounded-up.

Regular Scheduled Programming

No one here is naïve; we are aware of the many who are fighting to destroy our country. Some of us expected it: the cheating, the lying, and the chaos. But we are here to read the efforts and the positive results of those (including us and our fellow gnus) who are working so hard to save our country and the planet from those very bad people. We are furious with them for what they are doing and we are letting them know.

Remember:

💜Although they lie all the time, reality matters. And our goals — based on reality — are more popular.

💙 They want us to be demoralized. The best way to keep up your spirits is to fight. So, take the time to recharge your batteries, make sure to protect yourself, your family and your friends, but find ways to contribute to the well-being of our country and our world.

🗽 Reports on Resisters 🗽

Monday night Maddow often reports on resistance around the country. She can’t cover everything, and I can’t cover all she covers, but it’s still important to understand how people are pushing back.

For example, we’ve often heard “the cruelty is the point” when we try to understand the appeal of tRump to so many voters. Apparently they wanted cruelty, especially toward illegal immigrants (who they believed were all hardened criminals).

What is encouraging is that many Americans, once they get a taste of that cruelty, are sickened by it. They are pushing back against the ICE raids.

The flutter is about people kicking out ICE after they raided a restaurant.

x I just saw this on Maddow and it made me cry — Emily L. Hauser (she/her) ❌👑 (@emilylhauser.bsky.social) 2025-06-03T01:39:45.154Z

ICE also arrested a popular high school student — an athlete, a scholar, a guy who brightens up a room. Well, the town is marching against ICE.

People are protesting Avelo Airlines, that is deporting people. And New York State is considering banning Avelo Airlines from using any of its airports until they stop this.

President Zelenskyy and the rest of Ukraine (except for putin sympathizers) are at the front line of resistance. This week they had a really, really important victory.

x Ukraine asked for NATO membership, we said no because of Russian nukes. Ukraine asked for security guarantees, we said no because of Russian nukes. And, you want to resist? Remember, June 14 is NO KINGS day.

x It’s June — that means No Kings Day is almost here. Trump is ignoring the courts and the Constitution, so we’re gathering again on June 14 to remind him there are NO KINGS in our country. $RFK Jr caught making up stuff in his health reports Jessica Corbett Raw Story

The top Democrat on the U.S. House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform sent a letter to Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. on Monday in response to the Trump administration's recent "Make America Healthy Again" report and exposés about fake citations, mischaracterizations of studies, and apparent use of artificial intelligence. Since The MAHA Report: Make Our Children Healthy Again was published last month by U.S. President Donald Trump's Make America Healthy Again Commission, academics, campaigners, journalists, and lawmakers have raised concerns about it. Rep. Stephen Lynch (D-Mass.), who took over as acting ranking member of the House committee following the May death of Rep. Gerry Connolly (D-Va.), highlighted recent reporting by NOTUS and The Washington Post in his Monday letter to RFK Jr. "Despite the report's insistence on 'pursuing truth' and 'embracing science,' public reporting has revealed that the report cites scientific studies that do not exist, misrepresents the findings of certain studies, and may have used artificial intelligence (AI) to draw conclusions that are not based on actual scientific research," Lynch's letter states.

WASHINGTON — In the chaotic opening weeks of President Donald Trump's second administration, Democrats debated whether to push back on every norm-shattering executive action, or pick and choose their spots and hope Trump would prove to be his own worst enemy. That debate has been settled, with Democrats aggressively taking on Trump in the courts, in the streets and on social media. At the center of that messaging strategy is House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., who privately has been urging his members to be more visible in their districts and on digital media, and has stepped up his own activity in recent weeks. Rather than his regular, once-a-week news conference in the Capitol, Jeffries now holds as many as three press briefings with reporters each week in Washington. He is also making weekly appearances on popular podcasts outside the traditional political media circuit, including those hosted by Stephen A. Smith, Tony Kornheiser, Jon Stewart, Katie Couric and Scott Galloway. Marking the opening months of the Trump administration, Jeffries delivered a scathing 30-minute rebuke of Trump’s “100 days of chaos, 100 days of cruelty and 100 days of corrupt behavior.”

Learning the truth about Jan 6 opened her eyes to Maga’s lies Paul Glickman, Daily Kos

This is a great story about how Victoria Todd was influenced by The Apprentice and right-wing media and basically didn’t start doubting anything until she noticed the discrepancy between reality and the lies about covid. She was never a hateful person, but just totally misled and misinformed.

Here’s a portion of the diary.

And so in early 2021, she went back to not paying attention to politics. The thunderbolt that shook her out of her apathy struck in the fall of 2022, when she and her boyfriend — now her husband — took a road trip to spend Thanksgiving with his family in Montgomery, Alabama. “I was taking online classes at Wayne State University, and my politics professor had us watch a PBS documentary on Jan. 6,” Victoria says. “I can vividly remember going through downtown Atlanta, watching the documentary on my iPad while my boyfriend drove,” she says. “I paused it and asked him, ‘Did this stuff really happen?’ And he said, ‘What do you mean, did this happen? Of course it did.’” She asked him, “Did people really go in and say they wanted to hang Mike Pence? Were they that disruptive? I thought they were just outside the Capitol.” He said, ‘No, that’s why they were arrested.’” That prompted Victoria to start doing research. She learned about the Proud Boys and the Oathkeepers. “These were not good people,” she says. “They said things like, ‘I don’t care what the Constitution says.’ I thought, ‘What do you mean? That’s the most important thing. I love the Constitution.’” She goes on: “Thanks to that road trip, I was 100% done with MAGA. I was really mad that I missed what actually happened on January 6. I felt really, really dumb. I wondered how any politician could allow me to miss something like that. I lost all respect for Trump when I learned what happened.”

There are people who may be lost to us, but there are many who are just misled and misinformed. Remember, much of the media is owned by right-wing billionaires, and Russia infiltrated much of our social media. I know talking to these people isn’t for all of us, but those who can, should.

Voting rights. This may be the biggest issue threatening our democracy right now. Besides contacting your representatives at the state and federal level to do the right thing (depending on who they are),you can support and contact these organizations:

ACLU — American Civil Liberties Union

Democracy Docket — founded by Marc Elias, so important in fighting the challenges after the last election.

Fair Fight — founded by Stacey Abrams

🌱Grass roots. Join with local communities to make a difference. It could be your local Dems. It could be your school board or your library. Reach out to people. We all need each other these days.

🏃 Run for something. If you want to run for something, but have no idea what to do, these people will help you. They also like money and volunteers to help those people who are running, so even if you’re not in a position to stand for office, you can help.

👎 Defund the seditionists. This is a list with companies that sometimes have donated to the seditionists. The list is long. You will recognize many of the corporations, and you probably have a relationship with some — either you are a customer, a shareholder, or maybe even an employee. Contact them and compliment or complain, but let them know you are watching. Forward it to others.

📣 Let’s Honor Truth ☀️️

This week we honor NPR’s Gabrielle Emanuel, who is working to track down the people who are dying thanks to the world’s richest man denying medicine and food to the world’s poorest children.

EMANUEL: She told me that her younger son was 7 years old. He had a bike he loved, and he had sickle cell disease. She took him to a local clinic for his medical care. Then this past February, she noticed one night that her son had a fever. Early in the morning, she rushed him to the clinic. ✂️ EMANUEL: Speaking in Kanuri, she said when they got there, the security guards said the clinic was closed. That clinic had been funded by USAID and had received a stop-work order about a week earlier. ✂️ "I was shocked and became angry," says Mariam Mohammed, who is a widow. She didn't have money to pay for treatment at the government clinic. She says she prayed for God to intervene. Her son died that night. His name was Babagana (ph). Edifre Jacob (ph) is a doctor at the clinic. He cared for Babagana before the stop-work order. He says patients with sickle cell disease, where the red blood cells are misshapen, can deteriorate very quickly, but prompt medical care can save their lives. ✂️ EMANUEL: Now this particular U.S.-funded clinic did reopen in mid-April, but many others like it are still closed. ✂️ INSKEEP: Is there evidence of other deaths linked to aid cuts? EMANUEL: Well, it is very hard to pin down precise numbers. In many places, including where this family is from, there isn't a formal system for death certificates. The U.S. had funded efforts to gather this type of data, but aid cuts have disrupted much of that. Now, there are researchers who are trying to get to the bottom of this. INSKEEP: OK. What are they finding? EMANUEL: Well, modeling out of Boston University estimates that the abrupt cuts to USAID have meant nearly 300,000 people have died to date. These are really rough estimates, but they give a sense of scale. Researchers are talking many thousands of deaths, not dozens. The State Department did not respond to requests for comment, but in front of Congress, Marco Rubio pushed back, saying these models are completely inaccurate and maintained that nobody, especially no child, has died on his watch.

I learned about her on The Last Word:

🌹 Let’s Celebrate Love ❤️

Sometimes love shows up to fight against hate. A lesbian was beaten up by two guys in Illinois. That sucks. But what is helping is all the people who have stepped up to help her. Morgan Allison Ross Comic Sands

Kane County State’s Attorney Jamie Mosser released the following statement on the hate crime charges for both perpetrators: “These allegations are serious and will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. Everyone deserves to feel safe in public spaces, and no one should be attacked because of their gender identity or sexual orientation, as is alleged in this case.” Grass has received internet hate from people saying she deserved the attack, but she refuses to back down from seeking justice. She thanked her attackers for what they inspired her to become. After the hate crime charges were filed, Grass provided the following message in an ABC news segment: “They made me realize that life is short, and that I should go after my dreams. I want to be an inspiration for someone else and people to look up to, and they made me want to become that... While they ruined their own lives, they created a new one.” The internet has also rallied around Grass as she set up a GoFundMe page to cover medical bills and legal fees to pursue charges against the strangers who attacked her. With a goal of $5,000, the page has now raised over $74,000, with more than 2,300 donations. Reactions to the attack and Grass’s ongoing fight for justice were overwhelmingly supportive.

Man climbs Everest to install a defibrillator, three weeks later it saves a life Andy Corbley Good News Network

A man who visited Mount Everest Base Camp to install a defibrillator as part of his advocacy work has revealed the device saved a woman’s life just three weeks after he left Nepal. David Sullivan is the founder of Code Blue CPR, an organization that trains defibrillator use and CPR skills at home and around the world. Earlier this year, the 62-year-old from Surrey ventured to the Himalayas where he installed what he says is the world’s highest defibrillator. Climbers die on Everest all the time—not always of cardiac arrest—but certainly sometimes, and the use of a defibrillator within the first 3 minutes of a heart attack can improve survival rates from 8% to over 50%. ✂️ He returned from Everest on April 30th and, just three weeks later, learned that it saved a young climber’s life after her heart stopped.

Scientists create low-carbon alternative to cement Paige Bennett EcoWatch

In a new study, scientists have found a way to turn industrial waste, such as recycled glass and construction waste, into a soil solidifier that is cement-free. By cutting out the cement, the material serves as a lower-carbon material for green construction. According to the UN Environment Programme, the built environment and construction sectors make up 37% of total global emissions. Cement, in particular, is one of the highest-emitting materials, making up 8% of global emissions, the World Economic Forum reported. Cement is the most commonly used material for soil solidification. Soil solidifiers are often used in construction, such as for building roadbeds or building foundations. The solidifiers are added to soil for better binding, compaction, water-resistance and strength. But a team of scientists in Japan have found an alternative soil solidifier using Earth Silica, which is an alkaline stimulant sourced from recycled glass, and Siding Cut Powder (SCP), a waste product from construction. They published their findings in the journal Cleaner Engineering and Technology.

Electric ferryboat goes from Europe to Africa and back! Andy Corbley Good News Network

An electric ferryboat has gone from Spain to Africa and back in the same day, proving decarbonization of strait crossings is possible. The Swedish-made vessel traveled from Sotogrande, Spain, to Ceuta, North Africa—a 24-nautical mile trip—in just over one hour, matching the speed of conventional fast ferries. After recharging, the vessel returned to the Spanish mainland the same day. GNN previously reported on the Candela P-12 electric ferryboat entering service in Stockholm’s public transport system ahead of its mass-production roll out last year. In 2023, it had passed all of its performance tests with flying colors, achieving 30 knots per-hour with a battery life of 50 knots. Now, another major test has been overcome with another vessel—the first-ever intercontinental sea crossing by an all-electric boat. “There’s a clear need for additional fast, clean, and efficient travel options across the Mediterranean—and for direct lines that wouldn’t be economically viable with larger, conventional vessels,” said Gustav Hasselskog, CEO of Candela and pilot during the crossing.

💙 What You Can Do to Rescue Democracy 💙

It turns out that participation in democracy is not just an every-four-years event but requires active participation, like, whenever you can find time.

I know it’s tough to see the path forward. And I can’t guarantee that there is a path forward. But people who are smarter and braver than I have seen ways to move ahead.

Their (the fascists’) plans really are dark, but many of them are also dumb, in the sense that they don’t make sense. So many of them cannot succeed.

Here are some quick hits.

Stay involved. Yeah, that’s tough. I want to look away too, but by taking simple actions you can make a difference. Keep contacting your representatives, both in DC and at home.

Support causes that will fight. Send money if you can. Also, spread their news with clicks and conversation.

Slow them down. Oppose and block at every turn.

Make tRump unpopular. Doing this weakens him. And it should not be that difficult. The GOP made a lot out of Biden is old and eggs cost too much. Well, tRump is older than Biden was at the beginning of his term and tRump has no policies that are going to bring down inflation. And a host of other problems, like he’s a convicted felon.

Divide the GOP from each other. They are a coalition based on contradictory promises, so there’s plenty to work with.

Keep telling the truth and showing love.

Make sure to pace yourselves in this marathon and to practice self-care.
