Dairy intolerance: Two Types [1]

In retrospect I was stupid to consume it. Even though it was so big I only ate half of it. What happened next took me to the emergency room. This diary will be partly about dairy intolerance and partly about Mexican health care.
My wife and I were coming back from my appointment with the angiologist at the general hospital and decided to have lunch on the way. And here was my first mistake: Enchilada Suiza.
Enchilada Suiza
These are full of chicken and cream and covered in cheese. Delicious, but you’ll have noted two dairy components.
Then my wife wanted to go for an ice cream and I stupidly assumed my faulty ability to deal with dairy would be OK with it.
Not so. I finished it at about 2.30 PM and by six, I already began to notice the effects:
1. I had a low grade fever (37C)
2. I felt terribly hot but when I turned the aircon up I felt cold.
3. I checked my blood pressure and was horrified to find it at 179/100.
Forgetting about my known intolerance to dairy (I thought it not so much of an issue now) I assumed it must be too much salt from cafe meals this week. I bit a Nifedipine capsule in half to release the liquid. Half an hour later I was down to 165/85, still not good.
I struggled to get my BP down. next taking my regular Enalapril tablet, but no… so I took half a sublingual isoborbide and went to bed.
By 2AM I was feeling terrible and my BP was still out of control, and my nose was pouring mucous, so I got my wife to drive me to the emergency medical centre where we have a yearly subscription, open 24 hours … and it was closed until 9AM. Onwards, then, to my local clinic and primary care centre which has a 24 h A&E department.
It was empty so I was seen immediately. Case notes: 5 minutes. Triage: 5 minutes. Then I went to see the doctor and explained everything. She was concerned I might be having a heart attack because I had already vomited at home. So they gave me an ECG and it turned out no, I was OK.
Now let’s talk about what this was. A toxic reaction to a protein in cow milk called casein alpha-1.
I was suffering a non-IgE-mediated milk protein allergy causing an inflammatory response. Systemic inflammation can contribute to vascular changes and elevated blood pressure.
Casein alpha-1 can trigger an inflammatory cascade in the gut lining (especially in sensitive individuals).
That can activate the sympathetic nervous system and even cytokine release.
Result: Blood vessels constrict, heart rate increases → temporary hypertension.
I just got back from my follow-up and my BP has stabilised to 120/70 which is fine. I still don’t feel 100% though.
There are two main types of dairy intolerance. The best known is lactose intolerance. IGE2 (casein) is just as bad or worse. If you wake in the morning and need to vomit, and have cramps, consider that you may have it.
