Temporary halt to closing Job Corps centers. Some alternatives to Job Corps. And some help? [1]

It took me a wee minute to track down the original TikTok video. It was made by user @j..s..candid. I personally don’t use TikTok but this was picked up and shared by @charise_lee on Xitter. (Yes, I still visit that site. User is also on Blue Sky but I can’t find that she’s posted this particular video there.) She gave some options that people can use if Job Corps is no longer available. And that got me thinking about other options, too.
I’ve been worried to the point of literally losing sleep, thinking of the young people who are were enrolled in Job Corps. Job Corps, created by Congress in 1964, currently has 120 centers that are run by contractors. It has been running at a deficit, which was $140M in 2024.
Job Corps serves youth in need. It has provided a path to a diploma or GED; job training; vocational certificates and licenses. Often it also provides housing.
The administration has ordered the closing of 99 of those centers by June 30, as not being ‘cost effective.’ As though cost is the way to judge the value.
Yesterday, Judge Andrew L. Carter, Jr, SDNY, issued a temporary order to stop the closing of centers.
It is further ordered that Defendants, their agents, and all persons acting in concert or participating with Defendants are enjoined from enforcing, implementing, maintaining or giving the effect to the elimination of the Job Corps program. . . Including the stop work orders and termination and non-renewal notices delivered to Job Corps center operators starting May 29, 2025; from issuing, enforcing, implementing, maintaining or giving effect to any shutdown tasks, job terminations or student removals; and from taking any further action to eliminate the Job Corps program without Congressional authorization.
You can read the full order here. It’s short, only two pages, and written clearly.
But that’s only a temporary order. I don’t blindly trust that things will be set right, especially when I’ve also seen videos of young people who are bewildered, who’ve been given as little as 2 days to pack and leave, with no idea where to go. That’s what was bothering me in the wee hours this morning. Maybe things will be fixed; maybe not. But in the meanwhile, people are left with no clear path, and it may not go our way in the end. I wanted to find something to offer the young people, not just leave them standing on a sidewalk holding a duffel bag with all their possessions and no destination.
There are some alternatives, if you know someone either being displaced from Job Corps, who would have benefited from Job Corps, or is in need of those kinds of services. Some even are for adults. Start here:
If you know of others, add them in the comments.
And I’m wanting to find a way to help more directly. I’m elderly and ill, not able to give housing or even much financial help to a displaced person. But if you know of a way to give a hand, or to connect with someone who does, let me know in the comments. I have some skills after teaching for 43 years. I can help fill out forms. I understand the education system and what’s needed for a GED. I can’t do everything but I can do something.
