4-year-old from Mexico receiving 'lifesaving medical treatment' can remain in US: Lawyer

A 4-year-old girl receiving "lifesaving medical treatment" in the United States was granted humanitarian parole for one year, allowing her and her mother to remain in the country, the child's attorneys announced on Tuesday. The child and her mother, Deysi Vargas, have been living in the U.S. since 2023, but received three letters from the Department of Homeland Security in April saying their humanitarian parole was being terminated. The young girl -- who is identified by her lawyers under the pseudonym "Sofia" -- suffers from "short bowel syndrome," which prevents her from being able to properly absorb nutrients and fluid from food on her own.

Tulsa's new Black mayor proposes $100M trust to 'repair' impact of 1921 Race Massacre

Tulsa's new mayor on Sunday proposed a $100 million private trust as part of a reparations plan to give descendants of the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre scholarships and housing help in a city-backed bid to make amends for one of the worst racial attacks in U.S. history. The plan by Mayor Monroe Nichols, the first Black mayor of Oklahoma's second-largest city, would not provide direct cash payments to descendants or the last two centenarian survivors of the attack that killed as many as 300 Black people. He made the announcement at the Greenwood Cultural Center, located in the once-thriving district of North Tulsa that was destroyed by a white mob. Nichols said he does not use the term reparations, which he calls politically charged, characterizing his sweeping plan instead as a "road to repair."

Company reveals first-of-its-kind electric machines aimed at transforming construction industry: 'The changes are coming fast'

Volvo Construction Equipment recently announced its first midsize electric wheel loader and excavator at the Advanced Clean Transportation Expo, which will join its growing fleet of sustainable construction vehicles. The L120 electric wheel loader and 23-ton EC230 electric excavator join the company's six other diesel-free alternatives, helping pave the way for a cleaner future in the heavily polluting building and construction sector, according to ChargedEVs. Although the adoption of electric vehicles in the industry is still in its early stages, Ray Gallant, vice president of sustainability and productivity services at Volvo CE, said that "the changes are coming fast as we move into new product types and size classes."

Las Vegas officials report rare water surge into iconic lake after record rainfall — here's why this matters

In a rare twist for the desert city, Las Vegas just experienced a historic downpour — and it's sending much-needed water into Lake Mead. Thanks to a powerful low-pressure system, Las Vegas shattered its nearly 60-year record for May rainfall, collecting 1.44 inches in just a few days. For context, May is usually one of the driest months in the valley, averaging only 0.07 inches — and last year, it didn't rain at all. The result? The Las Vegas Wash, a crucial stormwater and runoff channel, surged over seven feet overnight, redirecting water straight into Lake Mead. While the inflow won't drastically raise the lake's long-term levels, it marks a rare and welcome moment of replenishment for one of the most important water sources in the western U.S.

What Ukraine’s Unprecedented Drone Attack Means For Russia’s Bomber Force

Operation Spiderweb, the large-scale Ukrainian drone strike against airbases across Russia yesterday, which you can read about in our coverage here, primarily targeted Moscow’s fleet of strategic bombers. These aircraft, which have been extensively used to launch cruise missile attacks on Ukraine, have been targeted before, but never on such a scale — a reported 117 drones were launched against at least four airfields. At this point, it’s unclear how many aircraft were destroyed or damaged, but there’s little doubt that the Ukrainian operation will have a long-term effect on Russian strategic aviation. According to an initial statement from the Ukrainian Armed Forces General Staff, the drones hit 41 aircraft. As of today, those claims have been reassessed, with Andriy Kovalenko, an official with Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council, saying that “at least 13 Russian aircraft were destroyed.”

An Extreme Drop in Oxygen Will Eventually Suffocate Most Life on Earth

For now, complex life flourishes on our planet thanks to its supply of oxygen. But Earth's atmosphere wasn't always like it is today, and scientists predict that in the future, it will revert back to one that's rich in methane and low in oxygen. Breathe easy though. This won't happen for probably another billion years or so. But when the change comes, it's going to happen fairly rapidly, according to research published in 2021. This shift will take the planet back to something like the state it was in before what's known as the Great Oxidation Event (GOE) around 2.4 billion years ago.

Innovative company's futuristic camper van could change the way we vacation: 'Just a more efficient way of traveling'

Camping is already one of the most sustainable ways to go on vacation, but designers in the Netherlands have taken things a step further. BBC travel reporter Rob Bell had the opportunity to tour the world's first solar-powered campervan, Stella Vita, created by Solar Team Eindhoven. This campervan is completely powered by solar and able to recharge without the need to plug into EV charging stations, making road trips and adventures truly limitless. Conceptualized in 2020, Stella Vita is a self-sustaining house on wheels, featuring a shower, a toilet, a cooking area, a sleeping area, and a raisable solar roof with extended panels for additional solar surface.

Archaeologists Are Unearthing a Massive Maya City That’s Been Hidden for 3,000 Years

Important archaeological sites often naturally reveal themselves after disasters like earthquakes and floods. However, it isn’t always that easy; many important remains are found thanks to organizations dedicated to preserving history. Over the past 17 years, the Uaxactun Archaeological Project (PARU) has identified over 170 archaeological sites related to the Maya civilization’s past. Of the 176 sites, only 20 have been excavated. Some of the most recent and most notable sites included three cities in Guatemala, and what researchers found there provides an incredible snapshot into what Maya civilization once looked like. The results were presented to the public at a press conference held in the Banquet Hall of the National Palace of Culture. The complex—spanning across Los Abuelos, Petnal and Cambrayal—revealed pyramids, altars, and intricate canal systems dating all the way back to the Preclassic period, according to a press release from Guatemala’s Ministry of Culture and Sports. The ancient Maya civilization is known for its innovation: math, astronomy, calendars, written language, agriculture—you name it, and the people living during the Classic Maya period probably accomplished it.
