When You Lose the Chamber of Commerce... [1]

In “An Open Letter to Northern Michigan Policymakers” business, community, and government leaders in Northern Michigan come together to speak truth to power. Their message is clear, “Regardless of where one stands politically, certain facts are undeniable: recent executive orders, the cancellation of congressionally approved federal grants and the administration’s tariffs are already having a negative impact on our region.” The letter goes on to quantify the economic, environmental, and social damage projected in the five-county Grand Traverse region. This is exactly the kind of thoughtful, bipartisan, community-focused leadership we need more of.
What’s especially encouraging is who signed on—Traverse Connect (our local Chamber of Commerce), the City of Traverse City, the regional electric utility, and Rotary Charities (a major force in the area). If you’ve lost the Chamber and Rotary, you’re clearly doing something wrong.
This letter is a bold act by community leaders and local industry heads. This is what leadership looks like. With enough businesses, nonprofits, and civic groups issuing similar open statements, we can build the kind of broad-based, local momentum needed to push back against Trump’s destructive agenda.
“The impact of these decisions is not abstract—they are affecting real people and communities, and their consequences will be felt for years to come. We encourage the people and families who call Northern Michigan home to reach out to their elected representatives at all levels of government, ask questions and express your concerns.”
Indeed. Maybe its time for us Kossacks to visit our local Chamber of Commerce — and find some common ground.
