For thousands of years, the Columbia River has served as a highway through the Columbia Plateau. In the nineteen century, Euro-American colonists began using steamboats on the river. The Columbia Gorge Museum in Stevenson, Washington has an exhibit featuring a model of the Baily Gatzert, the Queen of the Columbia River Steamboats. The steamboat was built in Ballard, Washington in 1890 by the John J. Holland shipyard. It operated on the Columbia River from 1892 until 1917.

According to the Museum:

“Launched at John Holland’s yards in Seattle, the Baily Gatzert plied the Columbia each day, leaving Portland at eight, docking at The Dalles at three, and returning to Portland at nine-thirty at night. The fare was one dollar. Capt. Archie Geer one June day found high water had closed the locks at the Cascades. Geer’s moment had come! Warning those who dare not share the risk, he and some 100 passengers plunged over the mighty Cascade Rapids. Her flags flying and whistles blasting, the Baily Gatzert joined a select list of sternwheelers to endure the famed river passage.”
