Don’t Just Boo Congress Member Ashley Hinson–Vote Her Out in 2026 June 2, 2025

Demagogue Donald, in his alternate universe bubble, continues to believe that his tax bill that cuts Medicaid and food assistance for millions of Americans to aid the superrich is just fine and dandy. Most House GOPers, after voting for this awful legislation to please their wacko cult leader, suddenly “discovered” that their constituents are absolutely furious over their lockstep support of “Dear Leader’s” “One Big Beautiful Bill Act.” As a result, most GOPers were fleeing any town hall meetings with angry constituents. They decided not to meet the people they supposedly represent to explain why they voted the way they did, because, quite frankly, they rationally can’t defend this “help the rich/aid Donald tax cut” legislation. Only two GOPers didn’t take the coward’s way out, as Daily Kos stated. They were Cong. Mike Flood (R-NE) and Ashley Hinson (R-IA). https://www.dailykos.com/stories/2025/6/1/2324952/-GOP-caved-on-Trump-s-big-beautiful-bill-and-voters-are-big-mad?pm_campaign=front_page&p…

And as predicted, Reps. Flood and Hinson were met by angry voters. In her deeply “Red” district, Cong. Hinson was booed by her town hall audience when she stated she was “proud” to vote for this bill. Hinson added, “This is a generational investment…”

As she continued trying to “defend” her vote, Kos said, the crowd’s boos drowned her out. https://www.dailykos.com/stories/2025/6/1/2324952/-GOP-caved-on-Trump-s-big-beautiful-bill-and-voters-are-big-mad?pm_campaign=front_page&p…

Hinson, however, didn’t leave her “bad enough comments” on Trump’s “beautiful” (NOT) bill alone. She doubled down with an even wackier statement, as Kos noted. Hinson claimed that judges who rule against Trump are engaged in “egregious abuses.” Chants from the audience then called her a “fraud.” https://www.dailykos.com/stories/2025/6/1/2324952/-GOP-caved-on-Trump-s-big-beautiful-bill-and-voters-are-big-mad?pm_campaign=front_page&p…

Here’s Ashley Hinson.

Third-term GOP Congress Member Ashley Elizabeth Hinson (41), according to Wikipedia, currently represents Iowa’s 2nd Congressional District (CD). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ashley_Hinson

In 2020, Hinson, won election to IA’s 1st CD and represented it for one term, according to Wikipedia. Running for a second and third term, in the U.S. House, Wikipedia noted that she ran in the IA 2nd CD. Hinson ran in the Hawkeye 2nd in her last two campaigns because, as Wikipedia stated, the most recent redistricting put what was previously her 1st district turf, including her home in Marion near Cedar Rapids, into the 2nd CD. She swapped districts with GOP Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks who went from the 2nd to the Hawkeye 1st. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ashley_Hinson

West Des Moines, IA native Hinson, according to the Almanac, received her BA in broadcast journalism from the University of Southern California (USC). Returning to IA, Hinson spent more than a decade as a reporter and news anchor for KCRG-TV in Cedar Rapids, which the Almanac Of American Politics said gave her strong name recognition in much of northeastern IA. In 2016, Hinson ran for IA’s state House of Representatives and easily defeated a Democrat in a Cedar Rapids suburban district where Hillary beat Donald that same year by just two points. https://sos.iowa.gov/elections/pdf/2016/general/canvsummary.pdf ,

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ashley_Hinson In 2018, Hinson won a close race against her Democratic rival. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ashley_Hinson

As the Almanac Of American Politics stated, Hinson impressed IA GOPers with her winning those two terms. She also served in the IA House as chair of the Transportation Committee and Vice Chair of the Appropriations Committee. https://www.almanacofamericanpolitics.com ,National Journal, 2023, p.750.

In 2019, according to the Almanac, Hinson declared her intention to run against first-term Democratic Congress Member Abby Finkenauer in 2020. https://www.almanacofamericanpolitics.com , National Journal, 2023, p.750. Hinson attacked Finkenauer for voting with Dem. Speaker Nancy Pelosi 91% of the time. The Almanac additionally noted that these two candidates spent $10 million in this race and national groups for both sides spent about another $10 million each for these candidates. The NY Times criticized Hinson for several instances of plagiarism on her campaign website. Hinson said she was “unaware of that when she reviewed the drafts presented to her by her staff.” She promised to hold her staff accountable. In the end, Hinson won by two points, 51%-49%.When Hinson ran for re-election in 2022, she defeated another Democratic opponent by 8.3 percentage points. In 2024, Hinson clobbered another Democrat by 15.6 percentage points. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ashley_Hinson ,

In the House, the Almanac stated that Cong. Hinson quickly impressed her fellow “Team Red” colleagues with both her communication ability and political savvy. https://www.almanacofamericanpolitics.com , National Journal, 2023, p. 751.

The Almanac noted that in July, 2022, “Politico” described Cong. Hinson as a “rising star” with the potential to replace Cong. Elise Stefanik when the latter leaves her position as chair of the Republican Conference. Hinson was put on the powerhouse Appropriations Committee. In 2022, Rep. Hinson, the Almanac stated, co-chaired the National Republican Congressional Committee’s Young Guns program. That program aids well-regarded GOP candidates, and ambitious GOP incumbents often use it as a platform to advance in the leadership ranks. https://www.almanacofamericanpolitics.com , National Journal, 2023, pp. 750-751

Hinson was one of several GOP politicians who voted against Pres. Biden’s key infrastructure 2021 bill but went on to take credit for local projects that bill enacted, according to the Almanac. https://www.almanacofamericanpolitics.com , National Journal, 2023, p. 751

Hinson also had a strong right-wing record. In 2021, the ADA, the Liberal Americans for Democratic Action, gave her a zero score, while in that same year, she received a strong conservative 85% Club for Growth rating. https://www.almanacofamericanpolitics.com

National Journal, 2023, p.750 In 2020, Rep. Hinson stated she was “open” to raising the retirement age for Social Security, according to “The Gazette.” https:// www.thegazette.com/government-politics/ashley-hinson-open-to-raising-social-security-retirement-age/

Cong. Hinson additionally supported the Supreme Ct’s overthrowing “Roe v. Wade.” The Almanac further stated that although she did not favor prosecuting women who have an abortion, she would not say whether she favored criminal sanctions against doctors and others who provided abortions. https://www.almanacofamereicanpolitics.com , National Journal, 2023, p.751 How “nice” of her!

Cong. Hinson’s Hawkeye 2nd has a Cook PVI, Partisan Voting Index of R+4. As previously noted, she has continuously won with stronger margins in her re-election campaigns, the last one by a “ y uu ge” 15.6% margin. Yes, some of her constituents have figured out that her tax cut and budget votes are awful, but that may still not be enough for a Democrat to win in this GOP-leaning district in GOP-trending IA. Yes, this district is still “in theory” considered swingy and competitive. The city of Dubuque in Dubuque County is normally Democratic and Cedar Rapids-based Linn County and Waterloo-based Black Hawk County went for Biden in 2020. However, the rest of this IA 2nd is GOP “Red” and its rural areas often outvote these Democratic-leaning cities, according to the Almanac. https://www.almanacofamereicanpolitics.com , National Journal, 2023, p. 751

Town halls where people booed Hinson and her Trumpist votes are fine. However, they are not enough. As Obama said in 2012, “Don’t boo, vote.” A lot more Democrats and moderates in the IA 2nd will have to vote to send Ashley Hinson home from D.C. in 2026.
