Some things the Democrats might want to talk about [1]

I keep reading, here at DK and elsewhere, about an item that I think isn’t helping the Democrats. I’m not going to mention, link to or tag the particular subject. Diarists here are free to write about what they want, except for maybe towing and rock crushing, though theoretically that could be woven into a relevant story too. So I’m not going to specifically call out those who write about and amplify such matters here. My opinion is that the subject, like so many in the past (“What about her emails?”), typically originates with Republicans, and gets fed like catnip to MSM outlets, especially cable TV “news” channels, that are either hungry for shiny objects to fill air time, or are biased toward the Republicans (who now own most of those media outlets), or both. Or perhaps even worse, the subject comes up because folks are hawking books on their cable TV “news” channel.

Maybe it’s because I do not tune into those cable networks that I look at this a bit differently. I see many of those stories as distraction squirrels, and am continually exasperated that so many Democrats chase them right up the tree, then amplify them, which I think helps Republicans and hurts Democrats.

Instead, therefore I would like at least to rattle off some other matters that might be good for Dems to discuss and amplify publicly, more than they are doing now:

For example, I really like this paragraph from a piece published yesterday by Josh Marshall at TPM, as it concisely contains both a list of current issues on which Democrats could be focusing, and a little bit of what the Democrats could do with such issues:

The way for Democrats to raise their standing is to demonstrate that they can be effective at addressing the challenges and dangers of today, as in stuff that’s happening right now: massive cuts to Medicaid; pervasive worry and insecurity tied to erratic tariff policy and the fear of inflation and recession; massive cuts to basic disease cure research. If I didn’t mention the issue that matters most to you, by all means add it. Very little of what Trump is doing is popular. It’s true that Democrats in Washington have very little effective power. But they can certainly use it more effectively than they have over the last four months. And where they can’t directly disrupt present policies, they can make the case against them publicly, build opposition, build arguments for electing Democrats next year.

Another one I would throw in there comes from author and political commentator Molly Jong-Fast, who posted this a few hours ago:

x Why aren’t Dems on everything talking about the Joni Ernst “you can die” bill? — Molly Jong-Fast (@mollyjongfast.bsky.social) 2025-06-02T17:28:16.317Z
