WASHINGTON — A Florida Republican threatened to block $150 million in federal funding to the D.C.-area transportation system Thursday, calling on the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority to make a series of name changes that honor President Donald Trump.
Posting an apparently AI-generated photo of Trump wearing a conductor hat that reads "WMAGA," in front of a train with the same abbreviation, Rep. Greg Steube (R-Fla.) said on X that he would hold up federal funding until Metrorail is renamed "TRUMP TRAIN" and the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority is renamed as the "Washington Metropolitan Authority for Greater Access" or "WMAGA" -- a reference to "Make America Great Again --" the president's political brand and campaign slogan.

After Donald Trump lost his re-election bid in 2020 and exited the White House, his Republican allies on Capitol Hill continued to look for ways to venerate him. Rep. Greg Steube of Florida, for example, introduced legislation that would’ve renamed the immediate waters surrounding the United States, labeling them the “Donald John Trump Exclusive Economic Zone.”
