9 Calif. Republicans in hot seat after consequential health care vote

House Republicans from California have a lot of explaining to do after voting in favor of President Donald Trump’s “big, beautiful bill,” which is expected to make cuts to health care programs and eliminate thousands of jobs for millions across the state. Last week, the House of Representatives, including all nine Republicans from California, passed a reconciliation bill spanning hundreds of pages. Officially called the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, it focuses on tax cuts and federal spending reductions, including gutting roughly $800 billion over the next decade, with a significant portion of the cuts expected to come from Medicaid. ... Four members — Reps. David Valadao, Young Kim, Ken Calvert and Kevin Kiley — have been named on a watch list by Emily’s List, a political action committee dedicated to electing pro-abortion-rights Democrats, which comes ahead of a competitive midterm election next year. All four of them have issued statements in the wake of their votes to advance Trump’s budget. Valadao and Kim represent districts with among the highest Medi-Cal enrollment rates, with Valadao’s district in the Central Valley and Kim’s in Orange County. In a letter from April 14, both said they were against the bill if it included Medicaid cuts — but they ended up voting for the bill anyway.✂️

NATO east flank backs Ukraine membership, Poland, Romania and Lithuania say

VILNIUS (Reuters) -Nordic, Baltic and central European NATO members are committed to Ukrainian membership of the military alliance, the leaders of Poland, Romania and Lithuania said following a summit of the so-called B9 and Nordic countries on Monday. NATO allies declared their support for Ukraine's "irreversible path" towards membership at last year's Washington summit. But President Donald Trump has since said that prior U.S. support for Ukraine's NATO bid was a cause of the war and has further indicated that Ukraine will not get membership.✂️

Unfortunately, all existing members (including the US) must agree (via UK commons) which I don’t see happening with this US president.

*This was a comment of mine in the GNR this morning, replying to Slideman’s assertion that Ukraine needed to join NATO right away, and I wondered who could veto it. It turns out that it has to be unanimous. But I found the article and it was current and it fit all of the criteria for a Shade item, so here it is. Thanks, Slideman.

The 40 Elections to Watch This June (Bolts magazine)

New Jersey, New York, and Virginia—three populous states that are electing hundreds of state and local officials this year—are holding their primaries over a busy 15-day period in June. In the highest-profile elections, Democrats are choosing their nominees to replace New York City Mayor Eric Adams and New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy. Further down the ballot, progressives are hoping to leave a mark in New York City’s council races and New Jersey’s legislative races. In Virginia, both major parties already know their nominees for governor, but Democrats will select other statewide candidates. Also on the menu? In a blast from the distant past, Anthony Weiner is mounting a comeback. Democrats are defending a pair of legislative seats worth monitoring in New England. Manhattan DA Alvin Bragg faces voters roughly a year after he oversaw the trial against Donald Trump, while a reform-minded prosecutor seeks re-election in Virginia. And in a wealthy California beach town, librarians are pushing back against the conservative city council’s efforts to police book access for youth. Voters will also settle Democratic primaries for mayor in Buffalo, Rochester, and Syracuse, and decide San Antonio’s next mayor in what has effectively become a runoff between the two parties. Below, Bolts guides you through the 40 elections to watch this month.✂️

Thanks, Nanny!

Police in Kent County town rescind ICE partnership following a backlash

Police in Camden, Delaware, withdrew from an agreement Tuesday to partner with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents because of what the chief of police said was pushback from the community. The decision to withdraw comes just one week after the department had signed on to the ICE partnership, which had deputized local officers to enforce immigration laws. … Whitney said the decision came in response to community concerns. He noted that he had received numerous calls on Tuesday from people opposing the move.✂️

Exclusive: US veterans agency orders scientists not to publish in journals without clearance

Senior officials at the US Department of Veterans Affairs have ordered that VA physicians and scientists not publish in medical journals or speak with the public without first seeking clearance from political appointees of Donald Trump, the Guardian has learned. The edict, laid down in emails on Friday by Curt Cashour, the VA’s assistant secretary for public and intergovernmental affairs, and John Bartrum, a senior adviser to VA secretary Doug Collins, came hours after the prestigious New England Journal of Medicine published a perspective co-authored by two pulmonologists who work for the VA in Texas. “We have guidance for this,” wrote Cashour, a former Republican congressional aide and campaign consultant, attaching the journal article. “These people did not follow it.” ✂️

The information war continues.

Democrats’ Hamlet Moment Isn’t the Start of a Solution But the Heart of the Problem

Parties succeed and gain traction by doing far more than by self-analyzing. And my own theory of the case is that core driver and cause of the low standing of the Democratic Party right now is not wokeness or immigration or Joe Biden’s age but the fact that Democrats are simply not effective at advancing the policies they claim to support or protecting the constituencies they claim to defend. Put simply, they are some mix of unable and unwilling to wield power to achieve specific ends.✂️

$50 dollar word of the day: fissiparous

fissiparous adjective fis·sip·a·rous fi-ˈsi-p(ə-)rəs : tending to break or split up into parts : divisive tending to break or split up into parts fissiparous tendencies within a political party

It’s a good read. My kneejerk reaction is that Hakeem Jeffries needs to be bolder and that Chuck Schumer needs to either grow a pair or step aside.

Poland election results: Who won, who lost, what’s next (Aljazeera)

Karol Nawrocki, Poland’s right-wing opposition candidate, narrowly won the second round of voting in the country’s presidential election on Sunday, according to the National Electoral Commission (NEC). Here is all you need to know about the results:✂️

I don’t know how bad Nawrocki is. He’s opposed to Ukraine joining NATO, but he’s skeptical of Russia (per the article — I know nothing about him). Not good news, but good news to be aware of.

*This was a reply to Seraph’s comment. I made itin this morning’s GNR because they had asked about the Polish results yesterday.

via TPM:

Also in Noem-related news, a victory for the Secretary of Homeland Security. A candidate with the MAGA stamp of approval, right-wing historian Karol Nawrocki, narrowly won a runoff in Poland’s presidential election Sunday. Noem had visited Poland last month for the country’s first CPAC and endorsed Nawrocki, a highly unusual move for a Cabinet official. (Noted 2020 election-theft co-architect John Eastman also spoke at the event.) The Polish president doesn’t have many powers, but can veto legislation, setting him up to impede the agenda of the more pro-Europe and pro-Ukraine Prime Minister, Donald Tusk.

Elected, but with limited powers. I guess I have no choice but to take it.

x More than a century after the Tulsa Race Massacre of 1921, one of the most horrific episodes of racial violence in U.S. history, the city’s mayor announced a $105 million reparations package on Sunday. It is the first large-scale plan committing funds to address the impact of the atrocity.

I haven’t really read the diary from this morning yet.

Tim Walz says we need to get mean

There was also blowback in commentary from a writer in the Strib of the lack of progress we’ve made, which is kind of telling from a writer that I think is right of center (not MAGA). I’m not in a perfect state, but we’re pretty good.

American Indian Citizenship Day – June 2, 2025

American Indian Citizenship Day is observed on June 2. It was on this day in 1924 that the Indian Citizenship Act by Congress granted citizenship to all American Indians born in the U.S. The day celebrates the history, heritage, and culture of American Indian tribes across the country. All the tribes have their own traditions and beliefs. American Indian Citizenship Day celebrates their contribution to the country’s culture and a reminder of their enduring legacy.✂️

National First Ladies Day – June 2, 2025

National First Ladies Day is on June 2 every year. This day recognizes and applauds the unique role America’s leading women played in serving the nation. From actresses and artists to scholars and activists, women have occupied this role, each shaping it uniquely. The role of the First Lady is both flexible and constraining, granting the opportunity to make a change and a high degree of public scrutiny that is often rather critical. It’s a difficult job with no rule book or formal procedure, but with great cultural and political significance.✂️

I absolutely love the fact that Hillary Clinton and Michelle Obama are the pictures in the above article. I hope it’s still there by the time you see this and not a picture of Melania in a thong wielding an AK-47 (it’s a thing, seriously).

WineRev has been posting a series on first ladies in his stints in the GNR. I expect to see more of (while I am writing this) tomorrow. [he delivered some]

Happy First Ladies Day, Dr. Biden.

National Leave Work Early Day – June 2, 2025

National Leave Work Early Day on June 2 is for those of you who find yourself living to work instead of working to live. The annual holiday was founded by employee productivity expert Laura Stack in 2004 to raise awareness of the benefits of increased workplace productivity. When the unofficial holiday falls on a weekend, the day is celebrated on either Friday, June 1, or Monday, June 3. The purpose of National Leave the Office Early Day is to demonstrate how making small adjustments in the way we approach our work can greatly improve the results of our work, allowing workers to become more productive while in the office and spending fewer hours working in the office.✂️

I would leave work early regularly. I also had people that would contact me via FaceBook after hours to do remote work when they were working late, and they needed something fixed. My coworker Matt had the same experience.

Let’s not forget the night when I was called in the evening to go downtown and help a coworker who had locked her keys and purse in a locker that wouldn’t open. Or the time I got a 3:00 AM call to check on a number of my offices because the network was down. A 20 minute drive in the middle of a cold winter morning to investigate what turned out to be a planned outage by our provider.

So, feel free to knock off work early. You’ll probably make it up at some future point. It’s late spring, enjoy it!

NATIONAL ROTISSERIE CHICKEN DAY

Chicken lovers celebrate National Rotisserie Chicken Day on June 2 each year. While there a numerous ways to cook a whole chicken, rotisserie chicken offers a slow cooking method that seals in flavor. When cooking chicken using a rotisserie chicken, the whole chicken is cooked on a rotisserie or spit that turns continuously over a heat source. This process slowly roasts and sears the skin to seal in the flavor. The result is a tender and juicy chicken. Some cooks inject rotisserie chicken with a blend of seasonings to give increase the flavor. The popularity of rotisserie chicken continues to grow as the health benefits of it become more widely known.✂️

Last, but certainly not least:

National Rocky Road Day

National Rocky Road Day is a day dedicated to the eating of Rocky Road ice cream; a dessert made from marshmallows, nuts, and chocolate. In addition to being an ice cream flavor, Rocky Road is actually a popular dessert that is even older than ice cream. In fact, it was this dessert that inspired the ice cream made with these same ingredients. But National Rocky Road Day can certainly be relied upon to celebrate either one–or both–of these decadent treats!✂️

I’ll spare you the video. I know you’re already craving some. Grab a spoon!
