Calling — not emailing — calling, WORKS. Just this morning I was on a “Federal Updates” zoom — over 1000 people on the call — for my own professional association, which is not the group I link to below, but the message was the same. And one of the speakers, now our association’s political policy director, had been a Congressional staffer for years. He confirmed — CALLING WORKS. It only needs to work for a handful of Republican Senators that are already uncomfortable with these radical cuts.

The link I provide below is the Call to Action from the Computing Research Association; you don’t have to be a Computer Scientist to adapt it — you just have to believe in the value of scientific and medical research! You can easily adjust the sample messages to fit your experience, whomever you are.

ACTION ALERT: Contact Congress to Oppose the President’s FY26 Budget Request ACTION NEEDED NOW: Please contact your representative in Congress *NOW* to tell them to safeguard the nation’s research enterprise, especially the National Science Foundation, from actions taken by the Administration and to reject the President’s proposed budget for NSF (or the NIH). The “What To Do” and “Talking Points” sections below give specific suggestions for communicating your concerns to your Senators and Representatives in Congress. There is also a sample phone script to give you an idea of what to say in your conversations with Members of Congress and their staff, as well as how to find the contact information for your Congressional delegation. The Situation Since the President was sworn into office in mid-January, his administration has taken several actions that undermine decades of work building the nation’s research ecosystem. These actions include funding freezes, proposed cuts to facilities and administrative costs (also known as indirect or overheard costs) at universities and research institutions, and unprecedented mass layoffs of nonpartisan, career federal employees at research funding agencies, including federal scientists. These actions have caused disruption and uncertainty across America’s research enterprise, and could have long-lasting, negative consequences for the nation’s competitiveness, national security, and economic prosperity.

For example — use the discussion guide to talk about yourself or a family member — how innovating medical treatment, based on medical research, saved their life, put them into remission. All of us have lived experience with the positive impact of scientific and medical research. Whatever your story is, use it to tell the staff of your Representative and Senators about it and why it’s important to oppose the willful, careless destruction of the greatest scientific infrastructure the world has ever known.

Modify the script for talking to a staffer; modify the script for leaving a message.

Call now, call tomorrow!
