It is time to dig past the obfuscation provided by MAGA. They are not stupid people but they offer stupid excuses that are patently false. It is as if, with the election over, they don’t need to consider their constituents’ wishes or welfare. They are lying because the truth would offend us. I know the obvious will shock MAGA supporters, but Trump is not primarily president for the People, but for Big Oil and Big Pharma.
MAGA is not saving the taxpayers money by eliminating the Dept of Education, NPR, and PBS, or by gagging and radically downsizing NOAA, EPA, FEMA and the Consumer Protection Bureau. Unless restrained by the courts, MAGA will end a great many benefits of citizenship. Many of these government perquisites benefit primarily rural families. Government is not business, when mail delivery goes private, rural communities may not be served. Climate change cost us $100 million last year and more each year as it ramps up. If they knew the science, they would know we will need much more FEMA funding.
If MAGA was concerned about the growing deficit, they would not give the rich an unneeded tax break. This undermines faith in the dollar and our ability to pay back loans. America’s credit rating has already been downgraded. The tax package passed by the MAGA controlled congress is unsustainable, burdens the middle class, while raising our deficit. MAGA has demonstrated no interest in paying down the nation’s debt or reducing taxes for the middle class.
As the climate crisis begins to intensify, MAGA is promoting oil recovery from previously protected and virgin tracts. At a time when we must stop burning hydrocarbons, MAGA is doubling down, making America Big Oil’s biggest promoter, accelerating rapid climate change. Small wonder Trump is feted in OPEC countries. Meanwhile, the rest of us are rightly concerned about the earth turning into a furnace over the next two decades. Rapid Climate Change is well underway, even if Trump has directed the government not to warn us, let alone fix it.
Americans want an administration that considers science and plans for America’s future after their term. MAGA denigrates scientists, ordered reports to the People to stop, and decimated the ranks of highly respected doctors and scientists at NIH, NOAA, EPA and elsewhere in government. Trump likes dumb people as voters, but to excel we must retain cutting edge competence in dozens of areas that are instead targeted for layoffs. Without science, prepare for a series of devastating shocks, because nature is beholden to physics, not Trump’s wish list. The difference between reality and the MAGA bubble will kill us all, unless we escape that bubble.
Trump wants another $200 million for the notoriously inefficient US military. The DoD will have a bloated $1 trillion budget, as great as all other countries combined. The budget increase is for the defense industry, the military-industrial complex that Eisenhower warned us of in his last speech as president, makers of $1.5 billion aircraft and flammable troop carriers. The US is the biggest arms dealer in the world - all high end. We don’t make mortar rounds or artillery shells. The troops will be treated like the middle class, i.e. as an afterthought. MAGA has cut 83,000 employees from the VA, ending mental healthcare and stopped cancer research. Trump is withdrawing us from our former role as protector of all free nations. What will he do with the world’s best military?
Boondoggles to enrich the already rich will continue under MAGA. Their cost-cutting is confined to those agencies that benefit the People. For example, we still subsidize Big Oil with $hundreds of billions, as if they were a new and vital technology, though they are a mature industry. If this money were spent on alternate energy development, we might survive the ongoing extinction. Another example is the DoD. Over the last 10 years, we mothballed the best air force in the world and created another super-expensive air force. We are spending $1.2 trillion to update nukes we hope to never use.
In Trump’s first term, the joint chiefs of staff provided rational advice to the president, reminding him of our capabilities and the total cost. Thanks to them we avoided another war. In his second term, Trump tried to shape the joint chiefs to be robots focused on carrying out Trump’s will. Trump wants all troops to swear loyalty to him, not his office, not the Constitution, not the People. I believe most in our armies, navies and air force, especially officers, are fierce patriots who take their vows much more seriously than the president and his cabinet. In a real emergency, he won’t have any yes men in the DoD, regardless of how he manipulates leadership.
Going by what MAGA does, their aim is to weaken the middle-class with fewer government services, and higher inflation, taxation and uncertainty. They will weaken the dollar by increasing the deficit and launching crypto currencies. They will further enrich the obscenely rich oil, gas and coal barons, at the cost of a livable world. They will keep us subservient with stress, fear, chaos and uncertainty. They will continue to incite and inflame small differences into yawning divides, targeting minorities to divert our attention. They will exploit the last surviving wilderness ecosystems like the Arctic Preserve, and even end national treasures like the majestic redwoods and national parks. They will align with foreign dictatorships and former enemies while spurning our close allies in Europe, Mexico, and Canada.
This is serious; we have gone to the dark side - heartless and uncaring, driven by greed for power and money, totally transactional, consumed and consuming by hate, temporal and temporary. On top of this, our government is not very smart – we fired the experts and no one who remains is allowed to be smarter than Trump.
Trump recently addressed the graduates of West Point as if he were stumping. He was probably the only person there who doesn’t know, understand or follow the Cadet Prayer: “Make us to choose the harder right instead of the easier wrong, and never to be content with a half truth when the whole can be won.”
Meanwhile, earth continues to warm, changing weather patterns, threatening crops, turning arable land into desert, flooding and burning places that have never experienced such devastation, creating radical shifts and uncertainty. I had hoped for more, but science and religion now agree - we are entering the terrible End Times the Bible foretold.
