Make America Expensive Again [1]

Thanks to Trump, the World Can’t Afford ‘Made in USA’. A few months ago this product — an 80 gram bar of dark chocolate (2.7 oz) cost 80 pesos ($4). Then it went to 115 pesos due possibly to the cocoa shortage. Now, it’s 151 pesos ($7.82). That’s like 10c per gram.

At around $0.10 per gram, gourmet chocolate now shares a price tier with some unlikely company: artisanal cheese, mid-range cuts of beef, and, in certain parts of the world, even low-grade cannabis. Once an affordable indulgence in many countries, U.S.-made chocolate is being tariffed into the realm of niche luxury — no longer a casual treat, but a status symbol. When a Hershey bar starts to flirt with the price of contraband, it’s fair to ask who these tariffs are really helping.

I drastically reduced my consumption of chocolate when the price rose from 80 to 115 pesos. At the new price, I won’t buy it.

Lindt chocolate comes to Mexico from their factory in the USA. Lindt (full name: Lindt & Sprüngli) is based in Switzerland. Its headquarters are in Kilchberg, a suburb of Zurich. I’d like to say this to Lindt: Stop sending us US-made chocolate please. Send us chocolate from Kilchberg instead.
