What little thing could have meant everything? [1]

Like clockwork, I head out in the morning for a walk through the woods around sunrise. I would not have taken up this habit, but for the enthusiasm my canine companion, a polite and playful pittie mix, with a few strong boundaries and direct communication, wagging tail and sharp teeth. Perfect dog for my style. I love my dog, and talk about him a lot, but, unfortunately not this time.
This morning on our trail, instead of the chirping birds or creeping birders, I stumbled upon a young person who had taken her own life. There were a couple of first responders already there, doing their best. I had no idea what was happening until I saw too much. I will leave the story there, as it is already difficult for me to process.
I cannot imagine the anguish this poor soul must have felt that needed to end this way. I have faced depression in my life and it burned and hurt and felt like it would actually just kill me. I have faced loss like this too, and understand what her loved ones must feel. I reeled for a solid 24 hours.
Maybe we are living epoch of dying hope. Maybe we are in times of extreme isolation. Maybe it is bad wiring. I really don’t know, and it is probably different for everybody. What I do know is that every time someone reached out or showed kindness to me in my worst days, it meant everything. At least enough to get through the night. I aspire to that.
Like clockwork, pitboy and I took our route through the trails today, to embrace the birth of the light.
