Saturday Top Comments: Legacy [1]

I am writing this on Wednesday, May 28. I have just heard that Harrison Ruffin Tyler has died at the age of 96. Who is Harrison Tyler, you may ask? He is the grandson of the TENTH President of the United States, John Tyler, whose term ran from 1841 until 1845. I’ll let you ponder as we pause for Station Identification.

Here at Top Comments we welcome longtime as well as brand new Daily Kos readers to join us at 10pm Eastern. We strive to nourish community by rounding up some of the site's best, funniest, most mojo'd & most informative commentary, and we depend on your help!! If you see a comment by another Kossack that deserves wider recognition, please send it either to topcomments at gmail or to the Top Comments group mailbox by 9:30pm Eastern. Please please please include a few words about why you sent it in as well as your user name (even if you think we know it already :-)), so we can credit you with the find!

John Tyler was born in 1790, one year after George Washington was sworn in for the first time. His son was born when he was 60. Tyler’s son Lyon had Harrison Tyler in 1928 when he was 75 years old and President Tyler had been dead for 60 years. Think about your own families. I have a grandmother that was born in 1900. So from my grandmother’s birth until today, one hundred twenty-five years have passed. In order for me to equal the space between John Tyler’s birth and Harrison Tyler’s death, I would have to live for another one hundred and five years. I’m 58. I don’t see that happening. Think about that. In the span between the birth of a man and the death of his grandson, the entire history of this country has elapsed. Talk about a legacy. The Tyler family continues, of course, but the generations will more likely than not be born at a more “normal” rate, like my personal family history.

And before anyone says anything, I know about the Tylers and their devotion to “Southern Causes”. But this is a thing to ponder, and much hay was made of it when Harrison’s older brother Lyon died a few years ago.

Anyway, that was a Thing that Happened that I thought was interesting.

Next week, I’ll be penning a rant based on dialogue and diaries seen here this past week that gets my teacher blood up. Stay tuned.

Now, on to Tops!

TOP COMMENTS

Brillig's ObDisclaimer: The decision to publish each nomination lies with the evening's Diarist and/or Comment Formatter. My evenings at the helm, I try reeeeallllyy hard to publish everything without regard to content. I really do, even when I disagree personally with any given nomination. "TopCommentness" lies in the eyes of the nominator and of you, the reader - I leave the decision to you. I do not publish self-nominations (ie your own comments) and if I ruled the world, we'd all build community, supporting and uplifting instead of tearing our fellow Kossacks down. Please remember that comment inclusion in Top Comments does not constitute support or endorsement by diarist, formatter, Top Comments writers or DailyKos. Questions, complaints or comments? Alas, no submissions tonight.
