I’ve been writing songs and chants in connection with my local Indivisible group with plans to incorporate them into the upcoming June 14 demonstrations. It started with one person in the group bemoaning the lack of new music, and another saying they would be happy to never have to say “Hey hey ho ho” ever again. Now I’m looking to share them with the rest of the world. My aim is to make them as accessible as possible to as many people as possible and to focus on raising hope in a dark time and building courage in a scary time. They are based on well-known tunes and speak to core democratic values shared by the majority of Americans. And, I hope fun to sing. Here’s one; I intend to post more songs and chants shortly, depending on the response this one gets.

When I heard they’d re-elected him at first I just went numb
One third of the electorate supports the crooked bum!
He thinks he’s got the rest of us beneath his tiny thumb

Finally pulled myself together and I got up off the floor

I bought some stamps and postcards, wrote my senators and reps,
I emailed them and phoned them with the handy Five Calls app
I told my friends and neighbors we don’t have to take this crap!

I marched and sang and chanted, by the road I held a sign
The drivers honked and raised their thumbs, that made us feel so fine,
For each one that flipped us off, we got love from ninety-nine!

This movement’s multiplying, spreading all across the land

For freedom and democracy it’s time to make a stand
