In WAYR?, I note what I’m reading and comment...you note whatt you are reading and comment. Occasionally, I may add a section or a link related to books…
I am reading:
The Bostonians by Henry James - The class leader of the series of books that I’m reading on James pointed out that James hits on themes that he normally doesn’t hit on at this point in his career.
Yeah, I get it but that’s only technically. The background reading that I’ve done about the book to this point has mostly pointed to the Southerner Basil Ransom as the chief character of the book but it is Ransom’s cousin, the feminist Olive Chancellor, that dominates everything and everyone in this novel, especially the other main protagonist, the young and gifted Verena Tarrant. At least to the point that I’ve read.
This novel received some of the poorest reviews of James’ career but in many ways this book was also one of the most groundbreaking and controversial novels of the late 19th century for reasons that are deserving of an essay for LGBTQ Lit.
I did remember that there was a movie based on this novel and…well…
Christopher Reeve speaking with a Southern accent in character as Basil Ransom in the 1984 movie “The Bostonians” might be enough to make anyone swoon. It was Vanessa Redgrave’s performance as the suffragist Olive Chancellor, however, that won Golden Globe and Oscar nominations in 1984.
The Long Loneliness: The Autobiography of Dorothy Day by Dorothy Day -
