You Can Also Commit Injustice By Doing Nothing [1]

The title of this is a quote by Markus Aurelius. It is a quote I can’t get out of my mind.
Imagine the trolley problem but without a person on the other side of the tracks. In this example, you can move a lever and save people! No one else will die! You just need to make the EFFORT of pulling on the lever. And the more people pull on the lever, the more people will be saved!
What would you think of a person who didn’t pull the lever? Who is the person who goes about his or her daily life and never takes a few minutes to take a turn pulling? Who ignores the suffering and the lever?
That person might say “I did nothing bad with my life. I’m not the one who put those people in danger! I went about my life.”
Would you agree?
Of course you wouldn’t. Inaction in that case is, for all intent and purpose, as bad as putting people in danger.
If you have the power to make the world better and you choose not to, then, in many ways, you are as bad as the people making the bad situation.
You are the proverbial “good German.”
Maybe you don’t think you can do anything. Maybe you think you are too busy. Maybe you don’t know what to do.
But you CAN do something. It doesn’t have to take lots of time.
And, most wonderful of all, you will feel better for doing something!
