Something happened this week that surprised me. Something that made me think—and I know now that I need to share it.
A Daughter of Alabama, as well as a Daughter of the American Revolution, I made the decision to leave my childhood home as I married a Californian. I left ‘home’ for Davis in 1971. It took me about 15 minutes to appreciate the climate and less than a week to realize California was now home.
Over the years I kept up with family and friends and enjoyed those relationships—and I have tried to keep up with technology so the internet has become a great friend, bringing Alabama’s changing culture and politics to the level of my gray matter.
Recently, I got a funding solicitation from a “Larriett for Alabama.” Before I clicked ‘stop’ I read it. Young man, black, from Birmingham, U of A, and running for a Senate seat currently help by Tommy Tuberville—I won’t even waste your time and my calm mental state with commentary on him. I sent Larriett for Alabama the minimal donation. Couple of days ago, I got a letter from his campaign. I almost trashed it unopened as I knew it would be a request for more money—but I didn’t. I opened the envelope and got the surprise of my political life. Inside was a brief letter, a business card and a small bumper sticker—Larriett for Alabama. The text of the letter thanked me graciously for my donation, talked briefly about the current and future campaign, thanked me again and signed off. I almost fainted. Checked the contents again for donation information and none was there. And my email, message boxes contain not a single other solicitation for money, even though I did not stop the messages. . You keep that up Larriett for Alabama! I’ll send a much more meaningful donation today—I found his website.
