We Deserve Better [1]

A few thoughts on today’s news media regarding Jake Tapper’s book which I will not name. It is being alleged that a cover-up took place regarding the former president’s cognitive abilities. By definition a cover-up is meant to conceal information and in this case the cover-up failed big time. Everybody knew the former president had lost a step or two. It was not a secret. Week after week the headlines bleated “the president is old.”

Setting aside for a moment the self-evident idiocy of that statement it became a refrain that applied only to him and not the candidate who knowingly lied about immigrants eating pets and armed gangs taking over whole blocks of apartment buildings. Not a peep about the candidate who couldn’t answer questions but would ramble about fictional characters as if they were real, the candidate who won’t release his taxes or his medical records but who lies about even his height and weight. The guy who is NOW president sits at his desk and signs papers that have to be explained to him just like his father did when the elder Trump had lost his mind. The former president’s condition is no longer relevant vis-à-vis his public life because he is no longer president. The current president’s condition is very relevant, but when it comes to his obvious cognitive decline not a word is mentioned about his age, except for those who gleefully opine on another term when he will be 82.

Jake Tapper withheld relevant and valuable information so he could make money. He is just the latest in a long line of alleged reporters who kept information to themselves so they could write a book. What else are these supposed journalists not telling us? Do we have a reason to believe any of these people who appear to be more interested in padding their memoirs than doing their actual job? Has the concept of truth and integrity been so corrupted that even reporters are now saying “what is truth anyway? Can we really know the truth?” We deserve so much better, not only from our government but from the people who are supposedly watching the government.
