Marco Rubio Says Cutting Off Medicine to Children Was “The Right Call” [1]

In Nigeria, babies with sickle cell are dying. They aren’t dying because we lack the medicine to help them. They’re dying because we took it away.
A new NPR report reveals that clinics supported by the U.S. Agency for International Development have been forced to halt treatment for sickle cell anemia after Republicans in Congress, with backing from Elon Musk-aligned groups, pushed through devastating aid cuts. These clinics once provided free testing and medication to some of the most vulnerable children on the planet.
Now Nigerian parents are being told that if they want their kids to live, they’ll have to pay for care that costs more than they make in a month. Testing kits are gone. Clinics are shutting down. Hydroxyurea, a medicine that helps prevent severe complications, is no longer available. One mother told reporters her five-month-old daughter has sickle cell disease but can’t get her medicine anymore.
When asked whether he stood by the consequences of his decision, Senator Marco Rubio said yes. “It was the right call.”
The right call. To take medicine from children. To shrug while babies die.
This is the direction the Republican Party has chosen. Not isolationism, not fiscal restraint, but open cruelty packaged as pragmatism. They want a West that does not reach out. They want a world where suffering outside our borders is met with a cold shoulder and a smug press release.
What they are destroying is not charity. It is credibility. When the United States builds a clinic, supports a nurse, delivers medicine to a rural village, it sends a signal that our power is grounded in more than bombs and markets. It says we have a vision for the world that includes dignity, cooperation, and survival.
Rubio wants to gut that vision and call it responsibility.
This is not about a single disease in a single country. It is about what it means to live in a world shaped by choices like this. It is about whether we will remember that human life matters outside of our borders. Or whether we will let the children die and call it a win.
