['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.']

Date: 2025-05-29

Congresswoman Maxine Waters is one of 3 Black members of Congress currently representing California in Congress and one of 14 to represent California ever. Congresswoman Maxine Waters was first elected to represent California's 29th District in 1990, the district splitting, so she represented California's 35th District from 1993-2013, and changing again, so that she now represents California's 43rd Congressional District.

Congresswoman Maxine Waters is the first woman and the first Black person to chair the House Committee on Financial Services, currently serving as the Ranking Member of that committee. She’s a member of the House Democratic Steering and Policy Committee, a founding member of the Congressional Progressive Caucus (CPC) and a member and former chair of the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC).

Congresswoman Maxine Waters is fierce advocate for international peace, justice and human rights and she walks the walk, as evidenced by her lifelong public service and by her legislative accomplishments. During her tenure in the US House of Representatives, Congresswoman Maxine Waters has sponsored 9 bills that were enacted into law. She spearheaded the Minority AIDS Initiative and authored the Neighborhood Stabilization Program. She’s a long-time friend of Haiti. So far, during the 119th Congress, Representative Maxine Waters has sponsored 11 bills.

Congresswoman Maxine Waters is not a mainstream or social media hound; she excels at being an extremely effective communicator and doer, in legislating, on the floor of the House, in Committee hearings and in her Congressional district.

Here are some examples of Congresswoman Maxine Waters in action from the past months’ time.

1) Speaking on the House floor for an hour, laying out charges against the mfg for corruption:

2) Initiating a walk-out from a House Financial Services Committee hearing:

3) Leading a Democratic hearing on the mfg’s crypto corruption and conflicts of interest:

4) Testifying (in the middle of the night) before the House Rules Committee on the consequences of the Republican Budget's defunding of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau:

5) Holding a town hall:

Floor speeches:

x I went to the floor today to share some of the stories I’ve heard from Delawareans whose lives depend on Medicaid. x Trump’s “big, beautiful bill”? It’s bullshit. It’s a straight-up scam that abandons working families and rigs the system even more for the rich.
