Carter Country follows the two-year journey of America's most unlikely Presidential candidate Jimmy Carter and his small town that followed him every step of the way. This documentary seeks to capture the forgotten spirit of 1976, the last great Presidential election of the 20th century, when a small town in Georgia suddenly became the political capital of the world.
Why Tell This Story?
Frankly, because it has not been done before. It's a story that in this divisive and
isolated nation needs to be told and needs to be heard.
Every Carter documentary tends to focus solely on him, his presidency, or his
post-presidency. But the story of his community and the 1976 election are not
typically explored and has never been a feature documentary.
But in this period of pronounced political violence and cynicism, there is
something compelling and earnest about this kind of political story.
A Central Question
The central question this documentary asks is if something so extraordinary as
the election of an outsider like Jimmy Carter is still possible? It is a central
component of the American dream, the notion that anyone can achieve such
heights. Yet, our Presidents and our elected officials have never seen more
distant or foreign. The cost of getting elected to any position is too taxing for
most citizens and few school children now dare to dream that elected national
service is remotely possible.
That is the power, the nostalgic pull of this election, this candidate, and most
important for this work, this incredible community.
