How Democrats can Lie about Trump to win Midterms [1]

As a good citizen, I almost never endorse lying. As the old cliche goes “Oh, what a tangled web we weave…,” and in most cases, lying frequently creates more of a mess than it it resolves.

But Trump is a special case, and his complicit legislators deserve to lose power in 2026 by the votes of a majority of Americans who are willing to fight them with whatever methods are required to cripple them (and him) politically. You could call these efforts “white lying” and their goal would be to help clarify the cause of what’s happening personally to low information voters

The basic approach I am suggesting here is to take every conceivable negative data point, from every federal, state, and municipal agency, and blame that outcome on Trump’s tariffs.

If unemployment goes up — blame Trump’s tariffs.

If local taxes go up — blame Trump’s tariffs.

If the value of 401k accounts go down (or slow down) — blame Trump’s tariffs.

If you can’t reach a Social Security agent on the phone or in person — blame Trump’s tariffs.

We should flood the zone with complaints about Trump’s tariffs wherever we see bad things that are happening to ordinary people. Even things that aren’t directly linked to the Federal Government like rising cancer rates, or higher infant mortality, or poorer test scores for elementary students, or more black lung disease for coal miners — blame Trump’s tariffs.

Now, DK community members might argue that we pick a different bogeyman than tariffs, and I could get behind such an effort if we choose it wisely. But I think we should be careful not to be too nebulous about the name of the bogeyman. Blaming Trump’s “policies” or even his “stupidity” or “heartlessness”, carries the risk of being ineffective due to too many past blaming efforts that never stuck.

I believe that this effort will not only work to flip the 2% of voters who switched from Biden (2020) to Trump (2024) but I think it could also peel off the top layer of his longer-time supporters who voted for him twice or three times — especially if they feel the effect of his malfeasance personally.
