The perfect nickname for the GOP? [1]

Mark Z. Barabak’s column in today’s Los Angeles Times was a tribute to the late Stuart Spencer, a long time political advisor to the Republican party in the days before it went all looney-tuney. Spencer passed away at age 91 in January and a bunch of his former colleagues met recently to memorialize him.

Barabak quoted Spencer’s past statements comparing Trump unfavorably (“a demagogue and an opportunist”) to Ronald Reagan and suggested the latter “would be sick” if he could have witnessed the former’s behavior.

But what got my attention was a comment by one of the attendees, also quoted by Barabak. It comes from Fred Karger, whose partner hired Spencer for an unsuccessful U.S. Senate bid in 1976, and who was the first openly gay presidential candidate in 2012. Karger says he no longer recognizes the Republican party, and suggests:

“It’s the Trump-publican party.”

That’s what we should all be calling it. Right?
